Katy Perry Says She 'Did Everything' To Save Her Marriage

Perry's 'Part of Me' documentary gives fans a candid look at the demise of her relationship with Russell Brand.
By Christina Garibaldi

It's been a whirlwind of a year for pop superstar Katy Perry. In 2011, she earned six #1 singles off her Teenage Dream album, embarked on a worldwide tour and endured a very public breakup from Russell Brand.

And now fans can share all these experiences and more as Perry is set to release her 3-D documentary, "Part of Me," on July 5th. The movie chronicles her unparalleled year as she has career highs, but suffers personal lows.

And it's those very personal moments, especially with Brand, that many will find most surprising. For the past six months, Perry has been mum on the issue of her divorce, and now for the first time, she is opening up about the split.

The film picks up just a few months after the two tied the knot, as Perry embarks on her biggest tour to date, the California Dreams Tour. Fans witness Perry put in hours of hard work preparing for the tour and traveling to hundreds of different cities. Yet, with the success that she was having onstage, it was offstage where things were falling apart.

It seems her new marriage and a grueling tour schedule were not mixing well, but it was not from lack of trying: Perry was adamant that while on her nearly yearlong tour, she take time out to see her husband, but in the end, it just couldn't save the marriage.

At one point, while flying to one of her tour stops, Perry admits to the camera, "I'm trying to keep my marriage alive."

"Part of Me" gives fans a rare glimpse inside a celebrity marriage, with Brand featured throughout the film. Some moments are touching, like when the comedian comes to wish her well on the opening night of her tour, yet some are heartbreaking to watch. In one scene, Perry is crying uncontrollably, delaying the start time of the concert, but like a true professional, she chokes back the tears and puts on a brave face for her fans.

Perry talks candidly about Brand in the film, revealing that it was her skyrocketing career that could have played into the downfall of her marriage. "I thought to myself, 'When I find that person that's going to be my life partner, I won't ever have to choose [between the partner and my career]. They won't be threatened or have weird motives.' Then I started to realize, that's not true," she admits. Yet, when asked in the film whether she still misses Brand, Perry begins to cry and admits that she does, but says she did everything she could to make it work.

"I have that same belief system with everything, from career to my life to my personal life, everything. And I will do everything it takes to not fail," she shares. "And I did everything it took, but it still failed."

Perry recently told MTV News that even though the subject of her divorce is difficult to deal with, she felt she would be doing her fans a disservice if she didn't include it in the film.

"The truth will always prevail," Perry said. "Everything has to be handled integrously and appropriately, and it's not nice to air all your dirty laundry, because that stinks, so I had to be very delicate with the situation, but I couldn't avoid the elephant in the room," she explained. "If you were to have seen that movie and walked out and [my breakup] wasn't at all mentioned, like it never happened, you'd be like, 'Eh, this is weird. What is she trying to hide?' I don't like to hide."

Check out everything we've got on "Katy Perry: Part of Me."

For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.

Beyonce Serenades Michelle Obama, Cements Comeback In Atlantic City

Queen B ascends her throne during the second in a four-night run of Memorial Day weekend shows.
By Rebecca Thomas

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — The "year of 4" continues.

Four months after giving birth to her first child — an arrival announced last August at the MTV VMAs — Beyoncé returned to the stage Saturday night, on the second of a four-night run in this East Coast resort city. And it was a spectacular fitting her rising icon status.

So what kinds of clues get 20somethings calling you "the greatest performer" of your generation? Well, it's in the details. For one, Revel, the sparkling, 6.3-million-square-foot beachfront destination that played host to Beyoncé's comeback, devoted a channel on its guest-room flat-screen TVs solely to B-related content: no weather broadcasts, nary a "Housewife" and no commercial breaks; just videos, all-star performances and more, all through Memorial Day weekend. It was evident in the distance traveled, too, with fans telling MTV News they'd made cross-country pilgrimages, while still others came from as far as Tokyo and South Africa to hail Queen B.

But those are just the hints, peripheral proof. The presence of First Lady Michelle Obama at last night's concert left little doubt that the little girl from Houston, who joined a girl group and then struck out on her own, had seen another benchmark in her relatively young career. After exchanging letters in recent months, with each calling the other a role model for girls, Obama turned up in a sleeveless green sheath waving like royalty from a balcony in Ovation Hall.

A little after 10 p.m., as the pounding opening march from "End of Time" kicked in, Beyoncé appeared in silhouette; the sequins were hard to make out but the wind-blown mane was impossible to miss. Finally, B, stunning in hot pink Stuart Weitzman heels and a beaded body suit, appeared on the massive stage backed by her dancers.

"Atlantic City, snap your fingers," she commanded, launching into "Love on Top." Without missing a step of the New Edition-inspired choreography, B powered through the song's modulations in an extended vocal showcase. Then she took an exaggerated pause, as if to catch her breath (or to bask in the adulation?), before belting out a final coda. The 30-year-old's comeback was officially under way.

Pushing through hits from her debut solo effort, including "Naughty Boy" and the dancehall-infused "Baby Boy," and Sasha Fierce smashes like "Diva," B defied all post-partum laws as she kept pace with Frank Gatson's acrobatic dance style. ("Y'all don't know how hard I had to work. I had to lose 60 pounds!" she laughed to the crowd later. "They had me eating lettuce.") And just as songs like "Single Ladies" and "Run the World (Girls)" are meant to serve as empowerment manuals for women, it became clear last night that Beyoncé's choreography is meant to do the same: a series of sensual quickstep moves that revolve around the hips and legs. It showed in the Fosse-style swing and formations on songs like "Get Me Bodied," and the strut-heavy footwork on "Freakum Dress."

"Sasha Fierce disappeared, but y'all bringing her back," B joked midway through the euphoric two-hour set.

For one of our favorite numbers, "Party," the 4 singer donned full-on showgirl regalia in a heady rendition that saw confetti coming from the roof and dice-shaped beach balls being tossed through the crowd as dancers in large feathered headdresses magically turned up in the aisles.

There were ballads, of course, at Ovation Hall, the more memorable among them a tribute to Whitney Houston and a cover of Lauryn Hill's classic "Ex Factor." And if Beyoncé reminded us of what we've lost in those gut-wrenching covers — she proved, too, that she's more than ready to carry the weight on her shoulders.

Share your reviews of Beyoncé's Revel shows in the comments!

Miley Cyrus Planning 'Sexy' Album Before Marrying Liam Hemsworth

Sources say Miley is working on music that is 'very adult and sexy and believable.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Miley Cyrus is hard at work on her fourth studio album. And while she attempted to branch out into a more adult sound on 2010's Can't Be Tamed, sources say this next studio release will be "very adult and sexy" and, more importantly, "believable."

Sources tell E! News that the former Disney princess, who just announced her engagement to Liam Hemsworth, is "having fun making music for the first time in her career." She's reportedly sexing things up with producers Pharrell Williams and Hit-Boy, recording music in Miami and Los Angeles. The insider continues, "We are watching a young girl turn into a young woman."

Cyrus is also taking other steps towards a more mature sound. She's working with music manager Bruce Flohr of Red Light Management and is no longer with the manager she had when she was closely associated with Disney. The source adds that people in her camp are referring to the musical move as "Miley 2.0."

The fact that Miley is focused on her career might make her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, happy. Sources tell Radar Online that he's hoping his 19-year-old daughter won't rush to the altar. The source adds that neither Billy Ray nor Miley's mother, Tish, was surprised by the engagement. In fact, Hemsworth asked for their permission before he popped the question.

"They knew it was coming," the Radar source said. "Liam lived with Miley and her parents when they began dating in 2009. Billy Ray and Tish love him like a son. However, Billy Ray is concerned about how young they are and he hopes that they aren't in a rush to get married. Billy Ray hopes the engagement will be very long, but he isn't opposed to the marriage at all. Billy Ray got divorced from his first wife Cindy, though, and he just doesn't want Miley to go through a similar heartbreak."

The same day the news broke, Billy Ray tweeted his congratulations to his little girl, writing, "All I ever hoped for as a Daddy was to see my kids reach their dreams. To find happiness ... peace of mind ... and someday know ... true love."

Hemsworth asked Cyrus to marry him on May 31, after three years of dating. They met on the set of "The Last Song." So what kind of ring did he get her? Well, she's rocking a 3.5-carat diamond in a Neil Lane-designed setting that Hemsworth helped create.

Eminem Confirms Slaughterhouse At Hot 97 Summer Jam

Em also tells New York radio station he's working on group's Welcome to: Our House and his seventh solo album.
By Rob Markman

Hot 97's annual Summer Jam lineup just got a little shadier: On Thursday morning (May 24), Eminem phoned into the New York hip-hop radio station to announce that his group Slaughterhouse will join Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and 2 Chainz at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on June 3.

This will be the first time Slaughterhouse will perform at the all-star hip-hop throwdown, so what advice does Marshall have for Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce da 5'9"? "Just be themselves," Eminem told Hot 97 and "Hip Hop Squares" host Peter Rosenberg. "I really feel like this group — hip-hop needs this, man, and I think people will see when this album comes out too."

King Mathers didn't hint at any surprise appearances. He is currently in the studio. "Right now, I'm finishing up everything on the Slaughterhouse album and kinda getting into my next record a little bit," he shared.

Em wouldn't dish any further on his upcoming seventh studio album, only saying that he is just "starting to toy" with the LP. Before that, SH will be dropping their Shady Records debut, Welcome to: Our House, in June.

"The album is done," Royce da 5'9" told MTV News on May 9 from the set of their "My Life" video. "In terms of vocal recording, we're done. Marshall is still in the process of mixing; we still got a couple of records that we're missing. We're on pace for June. Worst-case scenario, we're looking at July, but it's definitely coming — 100 percent."

Who are you most excited to see at Hot 97's 2012 Summer Jam concert? Demi Lovato Says Working With Eminem Would Be 'Amazing'

She's just one of several pop stars bridging the gap between hip-hop and rap.

Demi Lovato and Eminem are not two names often tied together. But the pop singer recently shared that she'd like to change that, saying she'd love to hit the studio with the legendary rapper.

"Hopefully, I can work with Eminem," the singer told E! "He's my favorite rapper, so anything with him would be amazing."

Hip-hop fans might be surprised to hear about Lovato's love for the genre, but Lovatics are more familiar with it. She made headlines last fall with her gut-busting cover of "How to Love" by Lil Wayne. When she spoke to MTV News about the deeply personal track, she fessed up about her love for the rapper and his song.

"I just loved the way that Lil Wayne took a risk doing the song 'How to Love,' and when I really listened to it, it's such a great song," she said. "It has such a deep meaning to it and I wanted to perform that, and I put a little spin on it and tried to make it a little more empowering. And I think it fit with the platform and the message that I have with my fans."

Lovato's one of many artists crossing over between pop and hip-hop. Taylor Swift was at the forefront of the trend in 2011, hitting the stage with the likes of T.I. and Nicki Minaj. Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off <MTVNLINK type="url" id="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</MTVNLINK>'s 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.

For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.

Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Katy Perry's 'Wide Awake' Video: Five Key Scenes

In her new clip, Katy mixes the fantastical with the autobiographical, and MTV News is here to break down the most important moments.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry closes the book on the Teenage Dream era with her new "Wide Awake" video, a classically creepy (yet slightly candy-colored), Lewis-Carroll indebted fairy tale that doesn't shy away from mixing the fantastical with the autobiographical.

Which means it's a treat for both fans and armchair analysts alike. And while you could spend an afternoon sifting through various scenes to understand their deeper significance (minotaur hospital attendants = critics who hated "The Smurfs"?), we figured it would be easier to just highlight a few key moments for you right now.

So, for your perusal, here are five important moments form Katy's "Wide Awake" video, each rife with psychological meaning. Or, you know, cool imagery. Same diff.

Katy Pushes Back: After literally going through the looking glass, Katy arrives in an eerie labyrinth, one we're pretty sure represents the constraints of celebrity. Tellingly, as soon as she enters, the walls begin closing in on her — only, rather than be crushed, Katy draws on her Samson-like inner-strength (and summons the same kind of pyrotechnics we saw in her "Firework" video) and sends the walls reeling. The message seems clear: Nobody puts Katy in a corner.

Katy Meets Her Former Self: Early in her journey, Katy comes face to face with a young girl who clearly represents her former innocence (just in case it wasn't clear, we later see the same girl get on a bike with a vanity plate that reads "KATHERYN"). With the trappings of fame comes the longing for simpler times, and Lil Katy helps guide her grown-up self through her perilous voyage — and even helps save her. Clearly, nostalgia is a powerful thing.

Katy's World Crumbles: After being hounded by pesky paparazzi, Katy's entire fantasy world begins to fall apart. It's a testament to the fact that, no matter how amazing a celeb's life may seem from the outside, the constant glare of the spotlight is enough to bring even the most famous down. After the encounter, Perry is left debilitated, confined to a wheelchair and unable to defend herself. Luckily for her, Lil Katy is there to protect her.

Katy Makes Her Escape: She powers past those naysayers and finally makes it to the exit of the labyrinth. Clearly, this is meant to show that no matter how tough things get, Katy is tougher, and, with her former self in tow, she bolts for the door — out of the madness and into (presumably) greener pastures.

Katy Punches Prince Charming: It's the scene everyone's talking about, and it's pretty clear who the disingenuous prince is meant to represent (here's a hint: it rhymes with "Bussell Rand"). At first, she's smitten, but, as her suitor goes in for a kiss, Katy spies him crossing his fingers behind his back — and responds with a pretty nifty right cross of her own. The impact is made even better by the "Oh damn!" expression that crosses Lil Katy's face. And with that, our fairy tale reaches its happy ending, with Katy surviving unscathed and ready for whatever comes next.

What did you think of Katy's latest video? Let us know in the comments!

Will Playboy Reinvigorate Jenny McCarthy's Career?

Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan and other starlets have proven that appearing in the men's mag can do wonders for buzz.
By John Mitchell

Jenny McCarthy on the cover of Playboy magazine
Photo:

After flying a little lower on the celebrity radar, Jenny McCarthy has been grabbing headlines again for her upcoming Playboy cover. The TV personality and author is featured in the July/August issue in an eight-page spread she says she's "really proud of." But McCarthy is just the latest star to turn an appearance in the legendary men's magazine into genuine buzz.

The 39-year-old made her Playboy debut in 1993 and went on to become Playmate of the Year. Her star turn in the magazine soon caught the eye of MTV, who offered a much-sought-after co-host gig on the popular '90s dating show "Singled Out." Her effervescent personality made her a hosting favorite and she has continued her career in TV — she currently hosts NBC's "Love in the Wild" — though her focus has turned in recent years to her work as an activist for autism issues. The interest around her sixth pictorial is sure to put her firmly back in the conversation after years of being best known as Jim Carrey's former girlfriend and for her controversial stance on child immunization.

If past Playboy centerfolds are any indication, this pictorial may be only the opening salvo in a reinvigorated career. From Lindsay Lohan to Kim Kardashian, an appearance on the cover of Playboy proved to be just the shot in the arm some starlets' careers needed to get them back on track.

Kim Kardashian (2007)
Though she remains a divisive figure, Kardashian was known almost exclusively in late 2007 for one scandalous thing: her sex tape with Ray J. In October of that year, Kim, along with her very large and colorful family, debuted in E!'s "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," and one of the first topics the show dealt with was her decision to pose for the December 2007 issue of Playboy. The attention paid to Kim's cover drove ratings for the show through the roof and now, five long years later, "Keeping Up" and its many spin-offs remain tent-pole programming for E! Since first posing, Kim's decision to bare all has factored into yet another more recent episode of the show. Meanwhile, she and her family have started an empire, making millions licensing their image to myriad products and launching a clothing line and fragrances. Kim is even branching out into acting with a role in Tyler Perry's upcoming "The Marriage Counselor."

Drew Barrymore (1995)
Barrymore's may well be the exemplar of a career that was rescued after an appearance in the men's mag. The actress was the definition of trouble in the late-'80s and early '90s: She rebelled against her family publicly, her teenage private life was tabloid fodder and she was plagued by serious drug problems and a flagging career. But in January 1995, she posed for the magazine looking happy and healthy and announced she was ready to get serious. That same year, she earned raves for her turn in Oscar-nominated director Herbert Ross' "Boys on the Side" and followed it up with a role in Woody Allen's underrated musical "Everyone Says I Love You."

In '96, she shocked audiences in "Scream," and two years later she found herself headlining back-to-back hits "The Wedding Singer" and "Ever After." In the years since, she's emerged as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, directed a major film ("Whip It!") and even scored Golden Globe and SAG awards for her role in HBO's Emmy favorite "Grey Gardens."

Lindsay Lohan (2012)
Exactly where Lindsay Lohan is on her road to a comeback depends mostly on how you feel about Lindsay Lohan. Sure, her turn on "Saturday Night Live" wasn't acclaimed, but it brought in huge ratings. She's acting again, but her first big post-legal-troubles role is in a Lifetime movie, and there have been, ahem, issues. Yes, she's booked a role in a buzzed-about indie film written by Bret Easton Ellis ("American Psycho," "Less Than Zero") and directed by Paul Schrader (writer of "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull"), but she's co-starring with a porn star. How above board can that be?

Regardless of all that, the point is, Lindsay's trying, and it all began with the January/February 2012 double issue of Playboy. Lohan channeled Marilyn Monroe's old Hollywood glamour for the 10-page spread, which went on to be one of the magazine's biggest sellers in years, prompting the magazine to return to the presses after it sold out in many markets.

Chelsea Handler (2009)
Things were going far from badly for Chelsea Handler when she posed for Playboy's cover in December 2009. Indeed, with two best-selling books and a hit chat show on E!, things were pretty great. But looking back, the never-shy comedienne, who did not appear fully nude (only scantily clad) in her pictorial, has seen her career skyrocket so spectacularly in the years since that it's hard to not see the photo shoot and, perhaps more importantly, the attitude behind its conception, as the very thing that has put her where she is today.

Since 2009, her talk show's ratings have exploded, she's released two more books and been given her own publishing imprint. She co-starred, co-created and produced two sitcoms, launched a major stand-up tour and appeared on the big screen with Reese Witherspoon in the comedy "This Means War." She is a media empire of her own creation, with Time calling her one of its "100 Most Influential People in the World" this year.

Of course, this tactic doesn't always pan out. Hoping to capitalize on the celebrity she developed on MTV's "The Hills," Heidi Montag posed for the magazine's September 2009 issue. Just a few months later, her debut album, Superficial, badly failed to entice buyers, proving that the attention brought by a Playboy cover is really only useful when a star follows it up with something the public finds equally interesting.

Do you think Jenny McCarthy's Playboy pictorial will be good for her career? Let us know in the comments below!

It's no secret that we've got a little crush on pop-punk singer Cady Groves.
