Katy Perry Sets Off 'Firework' At AMAs

Singer sparkles during-high energy American Music Awards set on Sunday.

Katy Perry has already revealed her inspiration for her latest single, "Firework." But the pop star took the track a step further during a high-energy performance that included sparklers at the American Music Awards on Sunday (November 21).

As the number began, a children's choir crooned the chorus of the empowering tune. It was Perry, however, who really made an entrance, descending from a star suspended from the ceiling. Dressed in a furry red dress (one she later ripped off to reveal another ensemble), the "Teenage Dream" singer walked to the front of the stage as the choir dispersed and backup dancers joined her onstage. Meanwhile, backdrop screens showed a slew of fireworks as Perry's dancers shot sparklers through handheld gadgets.

The pop star ended the visual light-fest on a high note, singing the last few notes of "Firework" while her dancers lifted her high up in the air. Perry is also nominated in multiple AMA categories, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Album and Artist of the Year.

The newly married Mrs. Brand teased the performance via Twitter a few days ago, writing, "Just finished AMA rehearsal... I am so excited about this remix performance. It's going to be a mixture of adorable & gorgeous. #AMA'S."

Perry spoke to MTV News about writing the inspirational track, her third single from Teenage Dream. "I think that's why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people and I believe that people have a spark to be a firework," she said. "It's just up to them, and a lot of times it's only us that's standing in the way of reaching our goals, fulfilling our destinies, being the best version of who we possibly can be, so that's why I wrote it."

Lady Gaga Urges Continued Support For 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Repeal

Gaga posts video message imploring U.S. senators who have said they would vote for the repeal to 'please keep your word.'
By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga has not given up on the drive to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy barring gays and lesbians from serving openly. As the Democrat-led Congress reconvened on Monday for the lame-duck session before Republicans take over leadership of the House of Representatives in January, Gaga issued a video message urging her fans to keep fighting.

"Right now, we're looking at tomorrow [Tuesday] being a very important day for you guys all to really be paying attention," she says in the clip, noting that the Senate will begin a repeal hearing soon.

The two-minute black-and-white video, which appears to be filmed backstage at a Gaga show, finds the singer sporting a short blond bob wig, a black leather jacket, animal-print tights and her signature round sunglasses.

The Pentagon is slated to release its long-awaited report on the repeal of DADT on Tuesday (November 30). Early leaks of the document show that the majority of troops don't care about allowing openly gay and lesbian soldiers to serve. Time magazine reported that Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will tell the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday that they're also ready to lift the 17-year-old ban. A Senate vote on the repeal could come as early as next week, but as Gaga mentioned in her video, if action does not come swiftly during the lame-duck session, the chances of securing a repeal could be lost when Republicans take over control of the House.

"Otherwise it could take years for it to happen," she says. "Social repression is currently running rampant in this country as many of you know. Kids are being led to believe that it's OK to hate and condemn based on our differences and this recent horrific news of gay suicides is really proof of our social repression and ultimately government repression that is killing our youth. We have to end this law because it reinforces discrimination and it's setting a bad example."

Gaga has been at the forefront of the fight to repeal DADT, putting the topic on front pages around the world in September when she arrived on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards accompanied by four gay and lesbian service members who'd been discharged because of the policy. That kicked off a flurry of activity by Lady Gaga over the next few weeks in an attempt to help get the DADT ban overturned before the midterm elections — an effort that ultimately failed due to a Republican filibuster.

"We've known for many years that an overwhelming majority of Americans are ready to repeal," she continues in the clip. "Senators, you have been put on notice by me and by the people of this country. You said you would debate and address this law when the Pentagon returned with a strategy and tomorrow morning you will have it. So will you keep your word? Please keep your word."

She then encouraged her Little Monsters to go to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network website to join the fight for repeal and for information on contacting Senators.

"As a performer, this issue means so much to me," she concludes. "And I know sometimes that political activism when you're a pop singer can be kind of trivial, but in truth I feel very close to all of you and I feel like I share a very special connection with my fans and I feel like I can speak for you, and you're screaming, 'Please end this law. Equality for all.' "

Miley Cyrus Is Learning 'Street Fighting' For 'So Undercover'

'I have a trainer and I have bruises everywhere,' she tells MTV News about prepping to play a badass FBI agent.
By James Montgomery

Last week we learned that for her new film "So Undercover," Miley Cyrus will take on the part of "a tough, street-smart private eye hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority." And while that description is accurate — and sort of awesome — it also sells the role short.

As Cyrus explained to MTV News backstage at the 2010 Europe Music Awards, her character is a whole lot more than just a private eye.

"She's basically this chick who grows up as a super tomboy, and she's an FBI agent and gets thrown into a bunch of girls that she doesn't understand because she's been around her dad, who's been in the FBI his whole life," Cyrus told us in Madrid. "And basically, by having to go undercover and be someone that she's not, she kind of finds the person she is, because she realizes she doesn't have to carry the weight on her shoulder of what her dad was, and she can be her own person."

And while there's depth to the role, Cyrus is also the first to admit that there are plenty of other perks that came along with it, namely, access to a trainer who's in the process of turning her into a badass street fighter, complete with an arsenal of moves that she'd probably love to unleash on a pesky paparazzo or two.

"I've been actually doing all kinds of stuff. ... I've been doing fighting, like learning how to box ... mostly like street fighting, so knowing how to, like, if someone comes up from behind you, being able to defend yourself," she said. "I have a trainer and I have bruises everywhere from, like, kicking the bags. ... And I've learned how to use guns, which was really scary," Cyrus admitted. "I cried the first time, I was like, 'I'm not doing this ... can't do this movie,' [but] then you get used to it, you get used to the feeling. You get used to, like, dropping, like he'll like point it at you and you've got to drop down real quick and grab your weapon and come back up. It's been really insane, so, it's a more fun workout than running on a treadmill."

Production on "So Undercover" begins in December, which means that, between now and then, Cyrus is only going to get tougher and tougher — and that's bad news for anyone who's thinking of crossing her.

"I want to learn how to do most of my own stuff," she smiled. "Just for normal life, I think every woman should know a little self-defense."

Consider yourself warned.

Leslie Nielsen Dead At 84

'Airplane!' and 'Naked Gun' star passed away on Sunday.

Leslie Nielsen has died.

Surely, you can't be serious. Yes, the comedy great and "Airplane!" star passed away on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 84 after being treated for pneumonia. And don't call me Shirley.

(For photos of the late funnyman throughout his career, click here.)

It was lines like the above, delivered in Nielsen's patented deadpan, that gave the dramatic stage and screen actor an unlikely comedic revival later in life.

After beginning his career in the 1950s as a matinee idol, taking on the roles of dashing heroes in films such as the sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet" and the stalwart captain in 1972's "The Poseidon Adventure," the Canadian-born actor switched gears in 1980 and took a chance with a slapstick disaster-movie spoof that would forever change his life.

Nielsen was at first reluctant to take on the role of the clueless Dr. Alan Rumack, but the white-haired, hilariously dopey MD became the comedic find of a lifetime, as the actor managed to steal the show in a movie packed with dozens of classic one-liners thanks to his impeccable timing and serious delivery.

It was an unlikely, but ultimately lucrative left turn in a long career that spanned more than 100 movies and 1,500 television appearances.

Born Leslie William Nielsen in Regina, Saskatchewan, on February 11, 1926, Nielsen signed up with the Royal Canadian Air Force before turning 18 and trained as an aerial gunner during World War II, but never saw action. He tried his hand at radio and studied acting, landing his television debut in 1950 as part of the "Actor's Studio" TV series. He spent the next several years bouncing around different TV shows, including "Lights Out" and "Tales of Tomorrow," and working in a Broadway play before landing his film debut in 1956 in "Ransom!"

Even as his movie career blossomed, Nielsen kept returning to TV to play earnest heroes in shows like "Rawhide" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." He continued bouncing back and forth between the big and small screens throughout the 1960s and '70s, appearing in hit shows like "M*A*S*H" and "Barnaby Jones" while taking small roles in little-seen films such as "Project: Kill" and "Day of the Animals."

By the late 1970s, he was on the "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat" celebrity-cameo circuit when producers/directors/writers Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker came knocking with "Airplane!" The slapstick film was not only a box-office success, but it recast Nielsen in a whole new light that the actor clearly relished. Following "Airplane!" he again stuck with the Zuckers for their six-episode 1982 "Police Squad!" TV series, in which he again spoofed a popular genre he had once played it straight in, police procedurals, giving the world the bumbling detective Frank Drebin.

He spent the rest of the 1980s mostly doing comedic cameos in films and spot appearances on series such as "227" and "Highway to Heaven." Mining the "Police Squad!" vein once more, he hit paydirt again in 1988 with the movie spoof "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" in which he revived the Drebin character. A series of sequels followed in 1991 and 1994, but Nielsen would never again capture the comedic imagination as he did at his second career peak.

By the 2000s he was mostly seen in cameos in the "Scary Movie" franchise — including a spot in the upcoming fifth installment — and other spoofs such as "2001: A Space Travesty."

What's your favorite Leslie Nielsen line? Share it in the comments!

Lil Twist Finishing Debut Album After 'Emotional' Lil Wayne Homecoming

'We did it big, and he was just happy to be home,' Young Money MC tells MTV News of his close friend and mentor.
By Rahman Dukes

The "Free Weezy" campaign officially ended following Lil Wayne's release from Rikers Island after serving an eight-month sentence, and the streamers and balloons from the "Welcome Home Weezy" parties have been taken down. Now, the Young Money captain and his stable of artists can focus on resuming their recording careers.

Earlier this year, Drake released the now-platinum Thank Me Later album only to be followed by labelmate Nicki Minaj with her debut album, Pink Friday, which is also expected to turn out big numbers on next week's Billboard charts. In the coming months, the home that Weezy and Birdman built will show no signs of slowing down with more debut efforts slated to drop in 2011 from Tyga, Lil Chuckee, Shanell and Lil Twist.

Twist didn't sit still while Wayne was away, staying busy recording a litany of material, some of which could see the light of day on his upcoming mixtape project with pop phenomenon Justin Bieber.

"Me and Justin are working on this mixtape," Twist told MTV News. "We probably gonna title it Best of Both Worlds [or] Best of Young Rap, Best of Young Pop. We got a few records done."

This past weekend, while walking the red carpet at the American Music Awards, Bieber also confirmed that the pair were working on something together. "Lil Twist is my homey, and we're working on stuff for fun," the teenybopper told MTV News.

Twist recently returned to his Atlanta home following some much-needed time with Wayne, his close friend and mentor. According to Twist, the reunion was memorable and emotional.

"My big brother just got home, Weezy F. Baby," Twist told MTV News from Atlanta. "We did it real big in Miami as soon as he touched down. I actually missed the show he did with Drake in Vegas, but as soon as he did, we partied like crazy. It was a very emotional and fun moment, man, because everybody was there, the whole Cash Money label and Young Money was there. We did it big, and he was just happy to be home, and it felt good."

Now that Weezy is home, it's back to business. "Right now, I am working on my debut album, Don't Get it Twisted," Twist said. "I actually went back into the album, I was done with it, and I went to Birdman with it, and he loved the album. But I wanted to go back in and get a few more songs by myself. I got a lot of collaborations on the album, so that's what I'm doing right now."

Britney Spears' 'Me Against The Music': 'Glee' Vs. The Original

Watch Brittany and Santana's version side-by-side with Britney and Madonna's.
By Jocelyn Vena

Heather Morris, who plays hilariously ditzy cheerleader Brittany on "Glee," got to channel her sort-of namesake on Tuesday night's "Britney/Brittany" episode. And the professional-dancer-turned-actress didn't disappoint as she re-enacted Spears' videos for "Toxic," "Slave 4 U" and "Me Against the Music." She tackled all of them with her spectacular dance skills and a pretty killer singing voice.

The anesthesia-induced dream sequences followed one of Brittany's stellar reveals: "My name is also Britney Spears. Brittany S. Pierce. I've lived my entire life in Britney Spears' shadow." Well, on Tuesday night she stepped out of her shadow.

Of all the video reinterpretations in the episode, the Madonna/Britney team-up, which saw Santana playing Madge and Brittany playing you guessed it, paid homage to the original 2003 video, directed by Paul Hunter. Aside from a few artistic tweaks in the "Glee" version's choreography, Morris and company do the original justice.

"The 'Me Against the Music' montage, it's literally copied exactly from the video, the shots and looks, but the choreography is made so much more for a dancer — none of it is from the video," Morris told New York magazine about the "Glee" version. "You just have to wait to see it. It's insane."

Hunter spoke to MTV News last year about his original concept for Britney's "Music" video. "I try to play opposites, when you have Britney in dark and Madonna in white," he said. "And then we see them kind of dance around the bed .. and you think they're gonna get on top of each other and do something crazy."

Miley Cyrus Promises 'Angels And Demons' For 2010 EMA Performance

Miley gets lacey and symbolic for MTV's Europe Music Awards this Sunday.
By James Montgomery

Miley Cyrus
Photo: MTV News

MADRIDMiley Cyrus blew in to Spain's capital city from LAX on Thursday night, got up Friday morning (November 5) to rehearse her performance at the 2010 Europe Music Awards, then hopped back on a jet bound for Germany (she had a previous engagement, after all). Of course, she'll be back on Sunday for the big show — as if you didn't know already, she's a pretty busy girl.

But after she wrapped rehearsals — and before she got back on her plane — MTV News's special EMA correspondent Gabe Saporta caught up with Miley for a few minutes backstage at Madrid's Caja Magica, where she revealed a few details about her super-secret EMA performance.

From the sound of things, it's going to be a rather epic, eye-catching thing. And quite possibly based on the work of "Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown.

"We actually came up with this concept because I wanted it to kinda be 'Angels and Demons,' but it's not a Tom Hanks reference," Cyrus said (referring to the star of both of Brown's movie adaptations). "It's [about the idea] that during this world, you're always going to have temptation; basically that's kind of the whole vibe."

Cyrus added that her performance will feature some elaborate costuming, some chiropractically challenging dance moves and, of course, some symbolism. Oh, and if the whole thing seems too deep for you, that's probably because you're a dude.

"It's a little more Victorian," she explained. "There's a lot of lace. The girls are dressed all in white, and the guys are in black. ... The girls will know what I'm talking about."

The 2010 EMAs will air on MTV2 on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, and an edited, performance-heavy version will be broadcast Friday, November 12, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Beyonce Can't Pick Her Favorite Jay-Z Song

Beyoncé arrives at her "I Am ... World Tour" DVD screening on Sunday
Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images

Jay-Z is letting fans into his world with two major releases this month. He just published his book, "Decoded," in which he takes a closer look at his career, and on Monday (November 22), Hova is releasing a greatest-hits album, The Hits Collection, Volume 1.

The album features Jay's most memorable tunes, including "Big Pimpin'," "Hard Knock Life," "99 Problems" and his collabo with his superstar wife, Beyoncé, "03' Bonnie & Clyde."

But when MTV News caught up with Bey Sunday at a New York screening for her DVD concert special, "I Am ... World Tour," she admitted that "Bonnie & Clyde" isn't her favorite Jay-Z track.

"God, that's not my favorite, even though I like it," she laughed. "I can't tell you which one is my favorite. It's just too many. You're putting me on the spot!"

While the pair may be releasing fresh products at the same time, the singer insists there is no competition in the Carter-Knowles household.

"No absolutely not, [there is no competition]," she told reporters at the DVD event, going on to praise "Decoded." "That book is unbelievable, and I think we're all really proud of it. And this DVD [out this] Thanksgiving — it's the holiday season of everyone's [material] coming out."

The DVD shows a new, more intimate side of the usually private Beyoncé, and Jay-Z admits that his book also sheds new light on his persona and career. "A lot of people listen to music, but they don't really listen to it," he explained. "You may know the words and you may bop your head to it, but you don't really understand what you're singing."

Open the floodgates! It's Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Beyonce Says She Wants To 'Make My Own Genre Of Music'

Singer is in the studio working on Sasha Fierce follow-up.
By Gil Kaufman

Beyoncé
Photo: Getty Images

Beyoncé doesn't have that much left to prove in her career. She's a megaplatinum artist, an accomplished actress, half of one of the most successful musical couples in history and a fashion icon.

But on the follow-up to her smash 2008 Grammy-winning album I Am ... Sasha Fierce, the singer is aiming to carve an entirely new lane for herself.

"I love to dance, I love to sing, and I'm actually in the studio now writing songs and producing," the singer told "Entertainment Tonight" from the set of a new commercial she's filming for Vizio televisions. "I have a lot of live instruments that I'm putting into the tracks to try to change the sound and make my own genre of music." The commercial will debut on Thanksgiving day, just after the singer rocks prime-time TV with an ABC Thanksgiving special entitled "I Am ... World Tour."

Among the producers and songwriters working with Beyoncé on the new, as-yet-untitled album is Ne-Yo, who helped write one of the 29-year-old singer's biggest hits, "Irreplaceable."

Ne-Yo told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Beyoncé's fourth solo effort is "coming along nicely. I can't speak too much on it, but it's another direction for her, and she's carving out her own niche. ... In a minute nobody will be in Beyoncé's lane. They really can't get in her lane now, but they really can't get in her lane after this album."

In the meantime, producer Jim Jonsin, who produced her song "Sweet Dreams," has also said he has some new directions in mind for Beyoncé. "I'd like to take it even more Depeche Mode-ish, like '80s electro with just some hard drums," he told Rap-Up TV. "I'd love to go there."

That fits with what songwriter Sean "The Pen" Garrett recently told Entertainment Weekly. Garrett, who was behind such hits as "Video Phone," "Diva" and "Upgrade U," said that he was slated to hit the studio with Beyoncé in September and that the results would be hard-hitting.

"I think we are doing a lot of uptempo records for this one," he said. "She's in such a good place right now in life that she is interested in making party music, definitely."
