'Avengers' Version Of Hulk 'More Accessible,' Mark Ruffalo Says

'He's got a wry sense of humor about himself,' actor tells MTV News at Tribeca Film Festival.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Of all the actors coming together to form the Avengers, Mark Ruffalo decidedly had the most to prove. After two previous Hulk films left fans largely unsatisfied, a new actor in the role could either lead to another letdown or, finally, to a version that felt true to the comics.

Fortunately for Ruffalo, early reviews of "The Avengers" overwhelming point to his version of Bruce Banner as one of the highlights of the film. MTV News caught up with Ruffalo at the closing-night ceremonies for the Tribeca Film Festival to get his take on the Hulk's positive reception and to find out what was different this time around.

Ruffalo felt the pressure that came with the role of the Hulk as soon as he signed on to be the third actor in as many films. "It was very daunting. I've never had a part so harshly reviewed before I even shot a single frame of film," he said. "The fanboys had a lot to say about it — granted, they had a great deal of care about this part and a lot of sentimentality as well, as do I, growing up on it."

The actor said that the latest technology gave him the biggest advantage over the first two iterations of the character. "There have been other great performances as Banner. The only real edge that I had was that the technology had changed so much since that last movie that I actually got to play the Hulk," Ruffalo said.

This latest version of the Hulk takes a different approach to the character, giving him a dry sense of humor about his condition, but Ruffalo gave credit to both Eric Bana and Edward Norton for helping lay the foundation in the first two films.

"I just think it's a natural progression of the other performances. When you find the guy at this point, he's tired of running. He's got a wry sense of humor about himself," Ruffalo said. "He's ready to turn and face the world. He's got a charming world-weariness that's kind of knocked the edges off of him and made him slightly more accessible."

Gina Carano Ready To Get Her 'Feet Wet' In 'Fast & Furious 6'

'I'm going to go from the 'Haywire' crew to the 'Fast 6' crew, so I'm going to get a very broad range of knowledge,' she tells MTV News.

Action fans rejoiced earlier this week when The Hollywood Reporter announced that MMA fighter-turned-actor Gina Carano was in talks to join the sixth "Fast & Furious" movie. It seemed like an inspired choice for the series that saw new life after "Fast Five" impressed last year.

MTV News caught up with the breakout star while she was promoting the Blu-ray release of "Haywire," and she spoke excitedly about the prospects of joining the action series.

"We got a call about two weeks ago to do 'The Fast and the Furious 6,' " Carano said. "We're in negotiations for that, so if that goes through, that will be a really cool opportunity for me to get my feet wet on another big-budget film and be around all these different types of actors."

Carano seemed pleased at the idea of appealing to different bases of fans within the action genre, moving from the art-house appeal of "Haywire" to the mainstream explosions of "Fast & Furious."

"I'm going to go from the 'Haywire' crew to the 'Fast 6' crew, so I'm going to get a very broad range of knowledge as far as people go," she said. "It's like two different high school groups. You've got the very artistic, and then you've got the action group of athletes, like hard-core. Very different personalities there."

Carano is in negotiations to play a member of Dwayne Johnson's team in the upcoming sequel directed by "Fast Five" helmer Justin Lin. As for whether Carano has begun sizing up her soon-to-be castmates, she said that's not something she has to think about. "No, I'm pretty secure. I don't need to size anybody up. I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about giving a good performance and understanding my character. That's what I'll focus on."

The actress wouldn't say for sure how close she was to signing on, but remained optimistic about her prospects. "It will be really good for me, and I'm completely open to it," Carano said. "If negotiations go good, we'll probably start filming that."

Britney Spears Would Be 'Great Fit' For 'X Factor,' Marcus Canty Says

'She would give me that pop I need,' last season's fourth-place finisher tells MTV News of rumored addition to judges' table.
By Christina Garibaldi

<P>During his final appearance on <a href="/news/articles/1676110/x-factor-marcus-canty.jhtml">"The X Factor," Marcus Canty</a> promised his fans it was "not over" for him yet, and he was right. The fourth-place finisher, who wowed viewers with his energetic stage presence and smooth R&B style, recently signed to Epic Records and has released his debut single, "Won't Make a Fool Out of You." </P><P> </P><P>Yet at one time it seemed like we might never have heard his music at all. Before "X Factor" Canty tried but failed to get through the audition rounds for <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/topic/american_idol/">"American Idol."</a> </P><P> </P><P>"I tried 'American Idol.' I got in front of the judges, I sang my little heart out, but I guess I didn't make it," Canty revealed to MTV News. "I guess they didn't want me." </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:754173/cp~vid%3D754173%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A754173" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>"Idol" may not have wanted Canty, but "The X Factor" did. With help from his mother, Canty reluctantly decided to step in front of the judges, hoping to get his chance to go to Hollywood. </P><P> </P><P>"The funny thing is that I didn't want to do 'X Factor' at first. I was just like, 'Man, I'm gonna do it myself,' then I look on the bill and I see L.A. Reid, and I'm like, 'Wait a minute, that's L.A. Reid!' " Canty said. "For so long I've been trying to get music to him. When it came that time, my mom was like, 'Look, you should just try it." </P><P> </P><P>With Reid as his mentor, Canty battled his way to a fourth-place finish with some show-stopping performances that gained him comparisons to Al Green and Bobby Brown. </P><P> </P><P>Canty also developed relationships with the other judges on the show, including former mentors <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Paula Abdul</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1678186/nicole-scherzinger-steve-jones-leaving-x-factor.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"I actually was kind of surprised," Canty said of the departures of Abdul and Scherzinger. "I thought it was a lot of drama on the show with Paula and Nicole, but they were so nice." </P><P> </P><P>Canty was no stranger to drama himself. The R&B crooner found himself in the bottom two during several episodes, most notably edging out <a href="/news/articles/1680940/rachel-crow-simon-cowell.jhtml">Rachel Crow</a> in an emotional and <a href="/news/articles/1675936/x-factor-rachel-crow-elimination-reaction.jhtml">controversial finish</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"I feel like Paula was honest. I feel like Nicole was honest &#8212; even in certain situations on the show that they got into, with me and Rachel and at one point, me and Drew," Canty said. "If I was in that situation I probably wouldn't know what to do." </P><P> </P><P>With Scherzinger and Abdul out of the judges' seats, rumors have been swirling that pop star <a href="/news/articles/1680782/britney-spears-x-factor-judge-offer.jhtml">Britney Spears may fill</a> one of the vacant spots. </P><P> </P><P>"Oh wow, I haven't heard that one. Britney Spears, wow. That should be interesting," Canty said in response to the news. "Britney Spears can be my mentor because, first of all, I was the entertainer. I know she would give me that pop I need. That's definitely a great fit."</p>

Exclusive 'Battleship' Clip Premieres Monday On MTV!

Stars Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård and Brooklyn Decker will unveil clip during 'MTV First' at 7:56 p.m. ET Monday.
By Kara Warner

We still have a few more weeks to wait to find out which "Battleship" castmember utters the immortal phrase "You sunk my Battleship!" So in the meantime, we're offering up the exclusive premiere of a very special new clip from the film, along with the stars themselves, for "MTV First: Battleship."

Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker will hit MTV's airwaves Monday, April 30, at 7:56 p.m. ET to premiere the exclusive clip, after which they will stick around for a meaty 30 minutes of Q&A on MTV.com hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz. Fans can get in on the action immediately by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or via Twitter (using @MTVNews, hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskBattleship). During "MTV First," the four stars will also answer your Twitter questions and dish on the very latest news.

"Battleship" promises to be a true summer blockbuster in every way. It is an action-packed event movie with an A-list and very attractive cast.

"The movie is really the story of a younger brother (Kitsch) trying to grow up and be a man like [his older brother (Skarsgård)]," director Peter Berg told MTV News. "There just happens to be an alien invasion in the middle of it."

The "Friday Night Lights" director also promised that despite the "Transformers" comparisons, his film is "completely different."

"I think 'Transformers' is awesome," Berg said. "I think [director Michael] Bay did an incredible job with that film and I think when you sit through 4 minutes of 'Battleship,' you'll realize that they are two completely different experiences.

"Obviously, our big bosses who are concerned with making their money back have a vested interested in attaching themselves to other successful films. We don't think about that; we think about making our own movie, and I'm pretty confident that whether you love 'Battleship' or not, the issue of comparison to other films is pretty irrelevant."

The film hits theaters across the country May 18.

Don't forget to join Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Alexander Skarsgård and Brooklyn Decker for "MTV First: Battleship" on Monday, April 30, at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV!

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

'Dark Shadows' Sneak Peek Reveals Johnny Depp's De-Fanging Plan

New featurette is dedicated to late star of original soap, Jonathan Frid.
By John Mitchell

Johnny Depp in "Dark Shadows"
Photo: Warner Bros

With just two weeks left until the big release of "Dark Shadows," Warner Bros. is stoking the coals of excitement with a new featurette that brings not only behind-the-scenes interviews and footage, but offers up an important new plot detail from the film.

"The legend of the vampire has been told for centuries, capturing the dark shadows of our imagination and inspiring filmmakers and actors to breathe new life into the undead," a voice-over reminds us at the top of the clip. "But there's never been a vampire like Barnabas Collins."

Depp said the idea to do the film came naturally to him and Burton, who have worked together on eight films. "I'd always been sort of attracted to horror films and things like that, even as a very young kid," Depp explains. "I said, 'Tim, we should do a vampire movie together.' "

And when Johnny Depp and Tim Burton decide to do something, it has a way of getting done.

A large part of the featurette focuses on the history of vampires in movies and reminds us that one of cinema's great vampires, Christopher Lee, is featured in "Shadows."

"One of my favorite moments I've ever been able to experience in a film was I got to hypnotize Dracula; I got to hypnotize Christopher Lee," Depp says. "He was, you know, the great Dracula."

To get into character as Barnabas Collins, Depp didn't stray far from the source material. "For Barnabas, everywhere I searched character-wise, I kept coming back to Jonathan Frid," the actor explains. "He really did something beautiful with that character on the 'Dark Shadows' series back in the '60s and early '70s."

Frid, who cameos in the film and is shown arriving at a party at Collinwood in the featurette, died earlier this month in his native Canada. The clip closes with an "In Memoriam" dedication to the classically trained actor, who maintained a close relationship with the show's fans by appearing at "Shadows" conventions and readings as recently as 2011, before his health began to decline.

The clip features some great new scenes from the film, including a fun bit where Depp's Barnabas seeks advice from Chloe Moretz's Carolyn Stoddard on "the art of courting a woman of this time," but importantly introduces a major plot twist that we wondered (all the way back in October!) whether Burton would include in his film: Barnabas' attempt to de-fang himself with the help of Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) and become mortal again to pursue a romantic relationship with Bella Heathcote's Victoria Winters.

"If a man can become a monster, then a monster can become a man," Barnabas says in a voice-over while Dr. Hoffman surveys large blood-filled beakers and Depp sits with IV lines running from him. It's a story line carried over directly from both the original soap and its short-lived '90s remake. (Indeed, this particular story line was the focus of NBC's revival starring Ben Cross and Joanna Going.)

"By tapping into vampires, witches, ghosts, the reason they're powerful is because we all kind of experience those feelings on some level," Burton says of the film. "It's something that remains in our popular culture because it's strangely part of our everyday lives."

Just two weeks to go, "Dark Shadows" fans! Are you excited for the flick? Let us know in the comments!

Eminem, Dr. Dre Inspire 50 Cent To Take His Time

'I'll be dead, I'll be gone, and the material will still be here to influence new artists,' 50 tells MTV News.

<P>Recording with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/dr_dre/artist.jhtml">Dr. Dre</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/eminem/artist.jhtml">Eminem</a> is bound to rub off eventually. While in the middle of recording his upcoming fifth solo album, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/50_cent/artist.jhtml">50 Cent</a> has learned to take his time in the booth, and that in part explains the delay in releasing his LP. </P><P> </P><P>"This is the first time that I've recorded and I haven't put pressure to release at a specific day. I've been on the shot clock the entire time. Dre and Em &#8212; I mean Dre's record hasn't been out in 11 years, so when you talk about perfection, it's gotta be crazy, right?" he told MTV News while at a New York book signing for his just-released <a href="/news/articles/1674008/50-cent-playground-book.jhtml">anti-bullying book, "Playground."</a> </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Fif Wants To Be A Perfectionist Like Dr. Dre And Eminem" id="vid:708832.id:1673935" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Dre's <i>2001</i> was released in 1999 and not long after its release, fans began to hear rumblings about the <a href="/news/articles/1656142/dr-dres-detox-not-due-april-20-rep-says.jhtml">oft-delayed <i>Detox</i></a>. Dre, a noted perfectionist, has been said to be putting the finishing touches on the LP for quite some time now, and recently Fif has adopted the super-producer's ear for detail. </P><P> </P><P>"I think that provides additional pressure for him that it's taken this long, and in Em's case he has high standards too," 50 said. "You wouldn't believe how many times he records the records that you hear. He's done it over and over and over and over to make it sound like the way that he feels it's supposed to sound." </P><P> </P><P>For his 2003 breakout hit "In Da Club," the G-Unit general wasn't nearly as meticulous as he has recently become. "In the beginning, it was like 30 minutes, 'In Da Club' was 30 minutes, to write it, have the vocals laid," 50 revealed. "I punched in a few times, it didn't matter it was good. Everybody bought it, they said it's a classic and now it's a process where I'm recording it, listening to it and saying, 'I can do that better than that.' " </P><P> </P><P>The veteran hitmaker has realized the influence that his catalog has, and it is that realization that has him thinking differently. "I understand it now because all the material that I put out is gonna be here longer than I am," he said. "So I'll be dead, I'll be gone, and the material will still be here to influence new artists moving forward."</p>

'Snow White And The Huntsman' Sequel In The Works?

It's more than a month until first Kristen Stewart film is released, but David Koepp is reportedly in talks to pen a sequel script.

Despite the fact that we're still a little more than a month away from the release of "Snow White and the Huntsman," there are already rumblings of a sequel.

According to Deadline, Universal has apparently already begun talking to screenwriter David Koepp about writing a sequel to the film, which is one of this summer's most highly anticipated movies. Koepp certainly has enough credibility in drafting scripts for big blockbusters: He has screenplay credits on "Jurassic Park," "Mission: Impossible," "Spider-Man," "War of the Worlds" and "Men in Black III."

Naturally, we don't know what happens to the characters over the course of the film, but star Kristen Stewart has already expressed interest in reprising her role as the titular Snow White.

"To be totally candid and honest with you, when I first signed on to this thing, the idea of doing another franchise was like, 'Wow, [we'll] cross that bridge when it comes.' It was something so far outside my realm of thinking," she told MTV News when asked if she'd be game for more action and adventure as the fairest one of all. "I was so focused on the first one, and I thought, 'Maybe, maybe,' but I've got stars in my eyes. I'm literally over the moon about what I'm doing right now," she said of her work on "Huntsman." "Yes, I would love to [do more 'Snow White' films]."

"Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders is reportedly Universal's choice to helm the sequel if it happens, and judging from his positive comments about working with Stewart, it seems likely the pair could team up again.

"Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director's point of view, it's great to get into her headspace," Sanders said. "We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she's gung-ho."

Check out everything we've got on "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga's biggest hits come out to play.
By John Mitchell

Lady Gaga kicked off her hotly awaited Born This Way Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite protests from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.

Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the BTW Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.

While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to elevate the age rating for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show — which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly — was considered unsuitable for children under 18.

The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group covered Seoul with posters accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances."

The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she tweeted her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.

Before the show, Gaga tweeted, "I can you hear you Korea. I'm shaking."

Gaga's performance was heavy on material from her Born this Way album, though her biggest hits, including "Bad Romance," Poker Face" and "Just Dance," were represented.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball set list:

» "Highway Unicorn"
» "Government Hooker"
» "Born This Way"
» "Bloody Mary"
» "Bad Romance"
» "Fashion of His Love"
» "The Queen"
» "Just Dance"
» "Love Game"
» "Telephone"
» "Just Dance"
» "Heavy Metal Lover"
» "Bad Kids"
» "Hair"
» "Yoü and I"
» "Electric Chapel"
» "Americano"
» "Poker Face"
» "Scheiße"
» "The Edge of Glory"
» "Marry the Night"

Johnny Depp 'Created' His Tonto For 'Lone Ranger'

'He's not the servant that he was in the radio series,' producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells MTV News about Depp's character in Disney film.

Don't let the title deceive you: "The Lone Ranger" is all about Tonto.

Well, perhaps the movie isn't all about Johnny Depp's wildly imagined Native American hero, but he'll certainly be at the forefront of the upcoming Disney blockbuster from director Gore Verbinski. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told MTV News as much at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, revealing that while "The Lone Ranger" is heavily focused on the masked gunslinger (Armie Hammer), Depp's Tonto will play a pivotal role in relating that story.

"It's him telling the story of the Lone Ranger. ... It's his voice," Bruckheimer explained of how Depp's Tonto steps into the spotlight of the story. "He's not the servant that he was in the radio series and television series. He's quite a different character."

Even if Tonto weren't at the center of the film, the visuals of the character alone would make him impossible to ignore. Depp recently spoke at length about why his Tonto looks the way he does, saying he drew inspiration from a Kirby Sattler painting.

"I think Johnny creating that character, he did it on his own," Bruckheimer told us. "He went out with his makeup people and found an iconic image that he loved and created it for himself. He did the makeup, showed me a picture and said, 'Let's go make this movie.' It just took a while to convince Disney to go make it!"

Indeed, not long ago, "The Lone Ranger" very nearly rode off into the sunset before it even got on the horse, when Disney threatened to pull the plug due to budget concerns. Those issues were ultimately ironed out, and "Lone Ranger" will ride on with a huge scope intact, budget cuts be damned.

"Minor things [were cut], nothing anybody will miss," Bruckheimer said about how the cuts affected the film. "The whole wonderful train sequences are still there. It's a big movie. It really is.

"It has some fantasy elements in it. It's grounded, but there are spiritual elements to it," the producer continued about the film's tone. "It's its own thing. It certainly has elements of humor, which Gore brings to everything he does, and great action as well. It's kind of like 'The Odd Couple' meets 'The Wild Bunch.' "

Of course, the reteaming of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trio of Verbinski, Depp and Bruckheimer begs the question: Will we see "The Lone Ranger" ride again in future movies? Bruckheimer wasn't sure if this film would launch a franchise or not, but he admitted that he "didn't know 'Pirates' was going to be a franchise" either.

"Hopefully this one's going to work, and if they allow us to make more, we'll make more," he said.

Check out everything we've got on "The Lone Ranger."

Is Believe The Place For Justin Bieber's Baby Mama Drama?

Pop star said he wrote about his 2011 paternity controversy on the upcoming album.
By John Mitchell

<P>Sometimes you just have some things to get off your chest. </P><P> </P><P>For teen pop phenom <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>, one of those things is a <a href="/news/articles/1673599/justin-bieber-baby-claim.jhtml">paternity suit</a> filed last year by a 20-year-old California woman claiming that a brief bathroom rendezvous with him following an October 2010 concert resulted in her pregnancy. </P><P> </P><P>Rather than ignore the matter, Bieber is <a href="/news/articles/1683817/justin-bieber-believe-paternity-scandal-song.jhtml">confronting it head on</a> with his new album <i>Believe.</i> "That girl &#8212; Mariah Yeater &#8212; who said she was going to have my baby. I wrote about that situation," Bieber told the BBC of his new album. "Every song has a piece of me... I wrote almost all of them or co-wrote them." </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~id%3D1682760%26vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>The case, which Yeater dropped in November, has many wondering if Bieber was wise to commit his feelings to something as public and eternal as an album, or if he should have just let go of what was really a minor controversy. </P><P> </P><P>Though few believed them, the rumors introduced Bieber to one of the many pitfalls of celebrity and briefly overwhelmed his press cycle when he was trying to promote his Christmas album, <i>Under the Mistletoe.</i> The accusation challenged his family-friendly brand, something <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/11/10/justin-bieber-legal-expert-weighs-in-on-paternity-case/">family law expert told MTV News</a> could be grounds for a defamation of character suit. </P><P> </P><P>The suit likely weighed heavily on Bieber, regardless of its merit, making it prime material for his songwriting. But does dragging it all back into the public sphere benefit him in any tangible way? His <a href="/news/articles/1683621/justin-bieber-paternity-accuser-message.jhtml">recent tweet about Yeater</a> &#8212; which read, "Dear mariah yeeter...we have never met...so from the heart i just wanted to say..." accompanied by an audio clip of Sasha Baron Cohen's character Borat saying, "You will never get this" &#8212; was neither subtle nor particularly sophisticated. And since details of the suit were made so public and remain fresh in the minds of his fans, why restart the conversation if there is nothing new to add? </P><P> </P><P>Responding to your own press is a slippery slope for celebrities, and it can do one of two things: clear the air or consume the conversation. </P><P>For Madonna and Michael Jackson, it did the former. "Billie Jean," Michael Jackson's classic declaration that he was not the father, was wrapped in a bit of mystery. There have long been contradictory claims that the song is about groupies MJ encountered early in his fame and that it was derived from a real-life experience in which a mentally ill fan claimed that Jackson had fathered her child. But it really doesn't matter; we just know that these accusations were out there, so MJ decided to shut it down with a song. </P><P> </P><P>The difference is, Bieber's controversy is already over and, considering few people ever believed the claims, was never a huge deal to begin with. </P><P> </P><P>Ever an expert at handling the press, Madonna held her head high when she addressed the massive backlash she encountered after she pressed through her sexually charged <i>Erotica</i>-era with a lone song, "Human Nature." She posited that people's anger with her had more to do with their own hang-ups than with her behavior and refused to apologize. Madonna knew she'd struck a nerve and defiantly declared, "Absolutely no regrets." </P><P> </P><P>She dually stood her ground and introduced something new to the conversation. With "Human Nature," Madonna held up a mirror to the public and asked "Is it really my sexuality you are uncomfortable with?" </P><P>Bieber needs to pay particular attention to this lest he fall hard into Taylor Swift territory, where the artist is practically expected to directly address the minutia of their private lives in every song. </P><P> </P><P>First, it was <a href="/news/articles/1599032/taylor-swift-explains-why-she-was-open-about-joe-jonas-breakup.jhtml">Joe Jonas with "Forever &amp; Always,"</a> then John Mayer on "Dear John" and <a href="/news/articles/1650042/taylor-swift-needed-to-perform-innocent-at-vmas.jhtml">Kanye West on "Innocent."</a> It's important, of course, for a singer/ songwriter to write what they know, but there's a reason we only just learned <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/02/the-man-who-inspired-adeles-rolling-in-the-deep-revealed/" target="_blank">who the subject</a> of Adele's multiplatinum, Grammy-winning <i>21</i> was (and why she's never confirmed it). </P><P> </P><P>We want to be able to apply a song's emotion to our own lives, but it's hard to do that when a track is either too specific or too self-indulgent. We haven't heard Bieber's song about Yeater, so we can't speak to whether it is either. If he has something new to say about the controversy &#8212; perhaps how it felt to be betrayed by one of his fans &#8212; then he may have found a way to turn lemons into lemonade. </P><P> </P><P>But if all he brings to the table are boasts about not being the father, well, then he should get ready for questions about how literal his love songs are regarding his relationship with Selena Gomez. Once you open the door and make your private life the subject of your professional endeavors, there's no turning back.</p>
