Styles P Breaks Down The Meaning Of 'MC'

'It's my job to say something,' rapper tells 'RapFix Live' of his responsibility as 'Master of Ceremonies.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Styles P takes the title of MC very seriously. On his upcoming album Master of Ceremonies, the Ghost expands the acronym to exemplify what it means to be a rapper of the highest caliber. The LOX rhyme spitter broke it all down with Sway on Wednesday's "RapFix Live."

"I named it Master of Ceremonies because I'm an MC and I felt like I'm gonna bring something to the table that a lot of people forgot about — a lost art," Styles told Sway of his album, which drops October 4.

In the beginning, it was the DJ who was the star in hip-hop. During the early house parties and park jams, the MC's main function was to toast to the DJ using witty and rhyming wordplay. As hip-hop evolved, it was the MC or the rapper who emerged as the musical star. For Styles P, his MC influences included Rakim, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane and the seldom-celebrated New Jersey rapper Chill Rob G. So when it came time for him to grab the mic, Styles took the title very seriously.

"It's my job to say something. At the end of the day, I have to say something," Peniro said, citing rap's current lyrical deficiency as motivation for his first solo album in four years.

The Yonkers lyricist even joked that after announcing his Master of Ceremonies album title on Twitter, one fan thought he was down with the Illuminati — a powerful, cult-like sect that conspiracy theorists accuse artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West of being involved with. "I laughed, but I was sad at the same time," Styles said, "because to them, a master of ceremonies sounded like some Illuminati term and I was like, 'Nah I'm an MC.' Do your history — this is where we come from."

Styles, who is a self-described "fan of lyrics," invited other MCs to be a part of his album. Not only do Rick Ross and Busta Rhymes appear on Master of Ceremonies' lead single "Harsh," other well-regarded spitters like Jadakiss, Sheek Louch and Lloyd Banks are represented as well.

"In hip-hop, I think a lot of us forgot about MC and what MCing is," he said. Luckily Styles P is about to give us a reminder.

'The Lion King' Maintains Box-Office Crown

Despite less-than-stellar reviews, Taylor Lautner's 'Abduction' comes in at #4.
By Ryan J. Downey

"Lion King 3-D"

Simba and company partied like it was 1994 at the box office over the weekend as "The Lion King" remained #1 for the second weekend in a row. The 3-D re-release beat back competition from four wide releases while hauling in another $22.1 million, according to studio estimates.

All four of the other movies in the weekend's top five were new releases, but none had the strength to topple the legendary Disney animated film, which has grossed $61.7 million domestically in its 3-D format alone.

Brad Pitt's "Moneyball" and the kid-friendly "Dolphin Tale" were in close competition for the #2 spot, while Taylor Lautner's "Abduction" (which has been savaged by film critics) and the action-centric "Killer Elite" (also not a critical darling) both failed to generate much excitement.

"Moneyball" was still just barely ahead of "Dolphin Tale" at press time. The baseball-centered flick has done well with critics, according to film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, where it has a 94 percent critical average. The movie took in $20.6 million, just $340,000 more than "Dolphin Tale."

Lautner's first post-"Twilight" vehicle mustered just $11.2 million to land at #4 on the box-office chart. "Abduction" is one of the most poorly reviewed films of 2011, barely beating the 0 percent Tomatometer rating of recently released "Bucky Larson" with a paltry 3 percent.

"[Lautner's] not a terrible actor, but if he wants a career after the 'Twilight' fades, he'll pick better films," wrote Entertainment Weekly.

The combined star power of Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro generated just $9.5 million for "Killer Elite." The film is based on the book of the same name and marked the feature film debut of Irish writer/director Gary McKendry, who has directed commercials for IKEA, Porsche and Heineken.

There were a few limited releases of note over the weekend as well, including two that featured blockbuster marquee stars from comic book movies: "Machine Gun Preacher," with "300" hero Gerard Butler in the title role, and "Puncture," which features Captain America himself, Chris Evans.

Next weekend's new releases include the dramedy "50/50," which stars Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen, who cowrote the picture partly based on his own close friendship with a cancer survivor.

Check out everything we've got on "The Lion King" and "Moneyball."

Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez's Arena Date: How Much Did It Cost?

A regular guy would have dropped serious coin to rent out the Staples Center for a romantic night out.
By Gil Kaufman

Membership has its privileges, and when the club you're in is the elite pop star society, there isn't much you can't get your hands on. That's why a teenager like Justin Bieber was able to swing the swankiest surprise date of all time with his squeeze Selena Gomez on Friday night when he treated her to dinner and a movie at the Staples Center.

Now, before you get any ideas. The 20,000-seat home of the Los Angeles Lakers (and countless major concerts) is not available to just any Joe Schmo. No, Bieber reportedly got the keys to the palace for free because he's sold the joint out three times and owner AEG Live figured they'd throw him a bone. Which got us thinking: What would it cost to treat your sweetie to a Bieber-esque night of steak and "Titanic"?

Check out photos of Justin and Selena.

As you might imagine, the powers-that-be at Staples weren't really willing to spill the beans, but we crunched some numbers on our own and here's what we were able to figure:

$475,000: That's how much it would cost you to buy a high-end VIP luxury suite for 14 at the Staples Center, which would get you about 2,500 tickets a year to Lakers, Clippers and Sparks basketball games; L.A. Kings hockey games; concerts; lectures; X Games; and wrestling matches. Given that the venue holds 20,000, we can only imagine a one-night rental would run you well into the six figures.

$200-plus: Bieber ordered steaks and pasta from the exclusive members-only Lexus Club at Staples, a 130-capacity high-end dining area where even the buffet will run you $57.

Priceless: The lucky couple reportedly watched "Titanic" on their date. Now, most men would try to save a few bucks and rent the regular DVD, but given JB's clear baller tendencies, is it safe to assume he called James Cameron and finagled an early copy of the 3-D anniversary Blu-ray edition that is due out in April?

$299 to $1,199: The price of renting an inflatable, 32- to 40-foot portable movie screen from FunFlicks.com for a special event. That is, assuming the Biebs did not make Gomez crane her neck and watch the whole movie on the Center's Jumbotron.

194: That's how many minutes "Titanic" would run if JB didn't have a remote that would allow him and Selena to skip some of the hours of extras.

2:30 a.m.: That's about how late into the morning the couple would have had to stay at Staples in order to watch all of "Titanic," assuming they started it as soon as they arrived at 11 p.m. and had it running during their meal.

$300,000: The amount Bieber pulls in nightly at each one of his concerts.

$53 million: That's how much Bieber banked in 2010. In other words, don't sweat it: He can afford this kind of date every night of the year if he wants to.

What do you think of Justin's date idea for Selena? Tell us in the comments!

VMAs Backstage: Five Things You Didn't See

Find out what happened backstage at the 2011 MTV VMAs.
By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Matt Elias and Jim Cantiello

Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images

For all the unforgettable moments that occurred onstage during the VMAs on Sunday night, there were just as many equally amazing happenings that went down behind-the-scenes. Thanks to our VIP connections, MTV News had access to everything that happened before, after and during the live broadcast. Therefore, in no particular order, we are proud to present five moments you didn't get to see:

Gaga's Gentlemanly Behavior Leaves Celebs Starstruck
As is her M.O., Lady Gaga's presence at the VMAs was a highlight in and of itself, and every celeb who encountered her had a wide-eyed story to tell of his/her encounter. Particularly Foo Fighter Dave Grohl's first introduction to Gaga as her alter ego Jo Calderone.

"I got to meet her for the first time tonight [as Jo Calderone]," Grohl said of meeting Gaga when he went to say hello to Queen guitarist Brian May, who performed with her during the show. "I was like, 'Brian May, what's up!' and she was right next to him and I said, 'Hi, I'm Dave,' and she goes 'I know who the f--- you are!' Yeah, it was rad."

We spotted Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and more hanging out backstage!

Another Gaga-centric highlight occurred during one of the commercial breaks, when Gaga as the confident ladies' man Jo Calderone (or Gago, as Twitter users tagged him last night) took a cigarette from behind his ear, lit it and smoothly passed it to Adele.

'Jersey Shore' Stars Make Friends Everywhere They Go
As part of the MTV family, the stars of "Jersey Shore" have become welcome additions to any and all of our awards shows. We witnessed the ladies of Seaside Heights — JWoww, Snooki and Deena — palling around with new BFF, none other than "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens. Later on we spotted them crossing paths with Jared Leto, which produced the following exchange: JWoww to Jared Leto: "Wow. I'm a huge fan! 'The Kill' is my favorite!" Leto: "Thank you so much!" Snooki, once they had passed the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman: "Aah?" To which Jenni replied, "That was Jared Leto. Don't you know who Jared Leto is?!"

Tyler, The Creator's Accidental Stage Dive Sends Him Into Unlikely Arms
Immediately following their win for Best New Artist, the many members of Odd Future and their assorted entourage were trying to shuffle off the circular stage, when suddenly there was a loud noise and everyone in the audience in the right section gasped. It was clear from the commotion that a member from Future had fallen off the stage. When the dust finally settled, we saw two unexpected heroes holding frontman Tyler, the Creator up: Kanye West and Kid Cudi.

Go behind-the-scenes with Wiz Khalifa, Kreayshawn and more at the VMA Pre-Show!

"It was really hard, but [the tears] came out when I fell offstage into Kanye's arms," Tyler half-joked as he processed the emotions surrounding his win and his almost fall.

Jay Z And Beyoncé Celebrate Baby News
Arguably the newsiest moment of the evening occurred when Beyoncé announced that she was pregnant, with a not-so-subtle rubbing of her belly at the end of her performance. Immediately following the big moment, Beyoncé and Jay-Z were enveloped backstage by ecstatic well-wishers including Kanye West, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. One of the sweeter of those moments was when Jay stepped outside Beyoncé's dressing room, to allow her some time with her female friends to gush and squeal over the news. The proud and sweet smile on his face when he did so made for our favorite VMA warm fuzzy moment.

BONUS: VMA Recap With MTV News' Jim Cantiello MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello does many things well, but his 60-second recaps of important events in pop culture are a must-watch. Check out Cantiello's super-speedy recap that includes analysis of Gaga as Calderone, what gets a hard-to-impress Justin Bieber to applaud VMA performers and Beyoncé's big announcement.

Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry Nab MTV EMA Nods

Gaga leads Europe Music Awards nominees with six nods, including Best Video and Biggest Fans at November 6 show.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is ruling the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards nominees list.

Mother Monster, who nabbed six EMA nominations, is followed by Katy Perry and Bruno Mars with four noms; Adele, Justin Bieber and Thirty Seconds to Mars are each up for three.

Gaga is up for Best Female, Best Live Act, Best Pop Act, Best Song and Best Video for "Born This Way." She scored the sixth nom in the Biggest Fans category, an honor she'll share with her Little Monsters if she wins.

American and Canadian audiences can vote for the North American nominee for the Worldwide Act award, who will represent the continent at the EMAs against contenders from across the globe.

So, who will go head-to-head with the superstar? Adele's unstoppable "Rolling in the Deep," Bruno Mars' "Grenade," Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" (featuring Pitbull) and Katy Perry's "Firework" will go up against Gaga for Best Song.

For Best Pop, Britney Spears, Bieber, Perry, Rihanna and Gaga are set to face off, while Adele, Beyoncé, J.Lo, Katy and Gaga also made the final cut for Best Female.

Battling it out in the Best Male category are Bruno Mars, David Guetta, Bieber, Kanye West and Eminem, who's also up for Best Hip Hop alongside Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Kanye West (a.k.a. the Throne), Pitbull and Snoop Dogg.

Coldplay, the Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon and Red Hot Chili Peppers are up for Best Rock. And the night's big prize, Best Video, features the most eclectic mix of nominees: Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise," Beyoncé's "Run the World (Girls)," Justice's "Civilization" and Gaga's "Born This Way."

On Monday morning (September 19), Bieber reacted to the nods on Twitter, writing, "Just got word that we got 3 MTV EMA Nominations for Best Male, Best Pop, Biggest Fans!! THANKS SO MUCH! LEt's VOTE!!!"

Well, those fans better take note. Beliebers voting in the Biggest Fans category will face off against his girlfriend Selena Gomez's followers, Thirty Second to Mars' devotees, Paramore's biggest admirers and, of course, Lady Gaga's Monsters.

The MTV Europe Music Awards air live on November 6 from Belfast, Ireland. For a complete list of nominees and to vote for your favorite artists, check out the MTV EMA website. Stick with MTV News as we roll out more information on performers and presenters.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Nirvana Among O Music Award Nominees

Katy Perry, Odd Future, Demi Lovato will also face off on October 31 in categories like Oops! I Did It Online and Fan Army FTW.
By Gil Kaufman

The list of nominees runs from Justin Bieber to Courtney Love, Britney Spears, Scissor Sisters, Katy Perry, Bjork, Nirvana, Dolly Parton and Snoop Dogg, and that can only mean one thing: It must be time for the O Music Awards again.

When MTV launched its first-annual digital music celebration earlier this year, we promised that it would be like no other awards show, with trophies handed out before, after and during the show, as well as throughout the year.

Sticking to that plan, the O Awards will return for a second round on October 31, with some of the new categories coming courtesy of user suggestions.

Among the five new user-generated categories are "Oops! I Did It Online," in which over-sharing celebs such as Sinead O'Connor and T-Pain will face off against the Game and Courtney Love; and Best Artist with a Cameraphone, which pits Demi Lovato against Bieber, Young the Giant, Katy Perry, the Deftones and Shiny Toy Guns. The other new categories include Best Web Born Artist (MNDR, Odd Future, the Weeknd), Best Vintage Viral Video (Metallica, Nirvana, Notorious B.I.G., O'Connor) and Best Lyrics Video (Perry, Joe Jonas, Lenny Kravitz, Christina Perri).

Among Gaga's two nominations are Fan Army FTW — in which she'll square off with the followers of Bieber, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Lovato, ICP, Adam Lambert and Tokio Hotel — and Must Follow Artist on Twitter, in which she faces Cher, Snoop Dogg, Blink-182's Mark Hoppus and Blake Shelton.

The O Music Awards will also honor a number of artists who are really good at this whole online thing, with Bjork, Chris Milk, Girl Talk and the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne vying for the Digital Genius Award.

The other categories include: Best Fan Cover, Hottest Music NILF (think about it), WTF I Love This Award (online craziness), the self-explanatory Too Much Ass for TV award, Most Outrageous Tweet and Best Music Forum. There are also awards coming for Most Innovative Festival, Best Music App, Best Music Hack, Beyond the Blog and Most Addictive Social Music Service, which includes such faves as Spotify, Turntable.fm and Rdio.

The first edition of the awards featured performances by Mumford & Sons, Foster the People, Lupe Fiasco, Matt & Kim and a world record freestyle by Chiddy Bang's Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege

The O Music Award's first-time winners included Gaga (Most Innovative Artist and Must Follow Artist on Twitter), Kanye West (Best Tweet), Tokio Hotel's Aliens (Fan Army FTW), Thirty Seconds to Mars (NSFW Music Video), Aquarium Drunkard (Best Independent Music Blog) and MJJ Fan Community (Best Fan Forum).

The O Music Awards 2 will unfold on Halloween on OMUsicAwards.com, as well as MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, LogoTV.com and MTVHive.com. Fans can vote for their favorites at OMUsicAwards.com.

T.I.'s First Post-Prison Track Is 'Hot,' DJ Drama Promises

Tip's friend and collaborator tells MTV News he's 'excited for the fans to hear it sometime real soon.'
By Rob Markman

T.I.
Photo: Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images

T.I. is almost home. On Thursday, the Trap Muzik MC will have completed his current prison bid for a probation violation that stems from a September 2010 arrest for drug possession. His longtime collaborator DJ Drama looks forward to brighter days.

"Me and Tip have been friends, working together for almost a decade now, so we know what we gotta do. It's really time to get to work and get to the music," said Drama, who has present during T.I.'s recent recording sessions that he's been allowed to hold since being in a halfway house. "So I'm just happy when I was in the studio with him to really see where his focus was at musically and I was excited for the fans to hear it sometime real soon."

T.I.'s imprisonment was not only a blow to the hip-hop community, but it also left a void in his hometown of Atlanta. "It's always a good feeling," Drama said of the prospect of having Tip free yet again. "When somebody like Tip, who is so influential in the city, isn't around, we all feel it in a lot of ways. I look forward to it; I'm happy, man. Bottles on me."

Drama couldn't confirm whether the Grand Hustle CEO will make an appearance at this Saturday's taping of the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta. It would be fitting that he make his return on BET's stage, but it's also where T.I.'s legal drama began, when he was arrested on federal gun charges in October 2007 just hours before that year's ceremony.

The DJ, who is preparing the release of his own album, Third Power, was able to talk about Tip's first post-prison track. The song, which is produced by rapper/producer Big K.R.I.T., was supposed to drop Monday but has not yet surfaced. "The record is hot," Drama teased. "Big K.R.I.T. deserves it. He's been working for a long time. So they're both fans of each other, so sh-- is definitely gonna be a nice sound for the ear."

What are you expecting from T.I.'s new music? Let us know in the comments!

Michael Jackson Manslaughter Trial Begins

Jury sees previously unreleased image of Jackson on gurney during opening arguments.
By Gil Kaufman

Randy and Janet Jackson enter the Los Angeles Courthouse on Tuesday
Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images

More than two years after Michael Jackson's death, the manslaughter trial of his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, opened in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday (September 27).

In addition to laying out story lines the prosecution and defense teams will follow, the trial quickly provided a shocking opening chapter when prosecutor David Walgren kicked off the proceedings by showing a previously unseen, graphic image of the 50-year-old pop icon's body on a hospital gurney following his death.

According to TMZ, Walgren meticulously set out the people's case against Murray, a cardiologist who was hired by Jackson to be his personal physician in the lead-up to the "Thriller" singer's planned 50-show This Is It comeback attempt.

Walgren told the just-seated jury that Jackson put "misplaced trust" in Murray's medical skills and that the prosecution planned to show that Murray repeatedly acted with gross negligence and incompetence. He pinned the cause of death as an overdose of the powerful surgical anesthetic propofol, which he claimed was administered by Murray, who had made arrangements with a pharmacy to purchase very large quantities of the drug that chronic insomniac Jackson allegedly used to get to sleep.

In addition, Walgren said more than a month before Jackson's death, the doctor made a voice recording on his iPhone in which Jackson, heavily slurring his words, is clearly under the influence of "unknown agents," which he said proved Murray knew the star's state and what the drugs were doing to his client.

Jackson was described as cold, shivering and rambling in the weeks before his death, but Walgren said the doctor continued to give him propofol and, when Jackson was clearly struggling in his final moments, he said Murray instructed a bodyguard to hide evidence in a blue bag, including bottles of propofol. He also noted that Murray never told paramedics or doctors at UCLA hospital that he'd given Jackson propofol.

Murray, who was working on a $150,000 a month retainer, faces four years in prison and the loss of his medical license if found guilty.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff countered by telling the jury that Jackson caused his own death by swallowing eight 2mg pills of the anti-anxiety drug Lorazepam, as well as injecting himself with a dose of propofol that instantly killed him. He said Jackson's struggles with prescription-drug abuse were so acute that no amount of determination or talent — and not even the biggest tour payday of his life — could help him mount the This Is It tour without some help.

"He died rapidly, so instantly he didn't even have time to close his eyes," Chernoff said of Jackson's quick demise from the alleged combination of tranquilizers and propofol taken without Murray's knowledge.

Chernoff also claimed that Jackson went "doctor shopping," promised to put some of Murray's former patients on the stand to show his skills and compassion as a physician (which caused Murray to tear up at one point) and said his client was not aware of how acute Jackson's issues were when he took the gig. In fact, Chernoff said, Jackson didn't have insomnia, but suffered from an "absolute, total and thorough inability to sleep."

After hiring him, Jackson allegedly told Murray he would use propofol with or without him, and in the two months that he administered the drug to the singer, Chernoff said Murray observed Jackson sleeping, waking up and living his life, which suggested to the cardiologist that it was not negligent to administer the drug to his patient.

The defense attorney also claimed Murray was trying to wean Jackson off the dangerous drug, a tactic that seemed to be working in the nights before June 25. But after an emergency meeting June 20, during which the show's promoter threatened to pull the plug on the tour if Jackson did not get his health in order, Jackson begged Murray to continue giving him the anesthetic so he could get much-needed sleep.

As he has claimed all along, Chernoff said Murray gave Jackson a small dose of propofol just before the pop star died, but not enough to kill him, suggesting that Jackson — who knew exactly how to administer the drug — shot himself up with the fatal dose. Murray pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Testimony in the proceedings — which are being televised and webcast — was expected to begin later in the day with Jackson's choreographer and friend, Kenny Ortega. Among those attending the first day of the trial were Jackson's father and mother, Joseph and Katherine Jackson, as well as siblings Janet, Jermaine, Randy, Tito and LaToya.

B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2 will drop on October 11, and the singer had this to say about the release: "Exciting news people ... new remix album is coming out on 10/11! Pumped for you to hear these tracks - I love them."

The album will feature reworked versions of 10 of her songs, both from Femme Fatale and her previous work. The songs are: "Gimme More" (Kaskade Club Mix), "Piece of Me" (Tiësto Club Mix), "Radar" (Tonal Club Remix), "Womanizer" (Benny Benassi Extended), "Circus" (Linus Loves Remix), "If U Seek Amy" (U-Tern Remix), "3" (Manhattan Clique Club Remix), "Till the World Ends" (Alex Suarez Club Remix), "I Wanna Go" (Gareth Emery Remix) and "Criminal" (Varsity Team Remix).

Spears dropped the first part of the B in the Mix series back in November 2005. On that record, folks like Justice, Bill Hamel, Junkie XL and Jason Nevins, to name a few, put their spin on major releases and under-the-radar tracks including "Me Against the Music," "Touch of My Hand," "And Then We Kiss" and "Early Mornin'."

The news comes as Britney preps the release of her next single, the Femme Fatale slow jam "Criminal," which made the track listing for B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2. Spears also recently tweeted that she's shooting the video for "Criminal" in England.

Eminem Slays Massive Crowd At Lollapalooza

Some 60,000 fans crammed to catch Detroit rap titan tear through headlining Saturday set with help from Bruno Mars, Royce Da 5'9."

CHICAGO — Some of the biggest names in hip-hop have played Lollapalooza over the years, from Snoop Dogg to Kanye West, Common and the Roots. But when Eminem took the stage on Saturday to close out the second night of this year's festival, it literally felt like everybody in the house was trying to cram into the sprawling South field to catch a glimpse of the reclusive rap superstar.

With 90,000 in attendance on a steamy, muddy day, it looked like at least 60,000 or more of those bodies were packed in as far as the eye could see to get a glimpse of Em's Lolla debut. And he didn't let them down during a hit-stuffed 90-minute set that touched on every era of his decade-plus career. He had some help, of course, in the form of Bad Meets Evil cohort Royce Da 5'9," hook-mistress Skylar Grey and surprise guest Bruno Mars.

Tweet your pics from Lollapalooza to @mtvnews and they could be featured on MTV.com!

With a blockbuster movie-like fanfare fit for a king and a shout of "I'm back y'all," a super jacked Eminem took the stage in black cargo shorts, a white T-shirt and black hoodie, bouncing on his feet like a boxer ready to pounce. Feeling the massive crowd's energy, he charged into "Won't Back Down," as apocalyptic video of nuclear explosions filled the massive screen behind him.

In keeping with the series of big festival shows he's been playing this year in place of a proper tour, the rapper put his catalog on shuffle, playing bits and pieces of songs like "3 A.M.," whose low-end retained that chest-thumping, ominous Dr. Dre rumble, even in short form.

Nimble and focused, Marshall Mathers crisscrossed the stage and played off hype man Mr. Porter during "Square Dance," with each man weaving seamlessly in and out of each other's lines. Like most of the tunes, the rubber-band snap "Kill You" had the crowd singing along to the murderous chorus gleefully before the tune ended abruptly with a startling shotgun blast.

With a giant heart beating on the screen, Em raised hopes that Lil Wayne might drop in for the doomy keyboard and rapid-fire rhymes of the Recovery track "No Love," but with road dog Weezy busy rocking his own crowds, like so many of Shady's illustrious musical kin, the Young Money millionaire was there in spirit only.

The years haven't dulled the edge of the parental strife story "Cleanin' Out My Closet." But when it came to "The Way I Am," the tune had an even sharper edge, with the minor key backing track sounding more sinister, along with a sharper bite in Shady's no-apologies delivery.

The rapper quickly changed into a Bad Meets Evil T-shirt for a hookup on the low-rider anthem "Fast Lane" with partner Royce, but nobody was expecting what came next. In typical Lolla fashion, rumors of a major guest star ran amok all day, with whisperers whispering that Em's rap consigliore, Dr. Dre, might make a surprise appearance.

But it was Mars who waltzed out strumming guitar to croon the chorus on Shady's latest hit, "Lighters." The crowd did their part by holding up their Bics, cameras and phones to create a glowing, waving sea of light, as Mars brought a feathery pop sheen to the harder-edge, lightning-quick interplay between Em and Royce.

Alas, there was also no Hayley Williams when the first strains of B.o.B.'s "Airplanes, Pt. II" rolled around, with a backup singer handling the chorus instead of the Paramore singer. And though Dido was there on tape only for the still-spooky stalker tale "Stan," Em upped the drama by delivering the voice of his obsessed fan in a soft, creepy near-whisper.

With bits of Aerosmith, massive arm-waving choruses and a seductively detached persona, Eminem proved that he belongs on the stage at Lollapalooza alongside the illustrious group of rock legends that have graced it in the past. Especially since he held the rapping-along-to-every-verse crowd in the palm of his hand, even as he mocked them for getting wasted to his sobriety-celebrating Recovery album.

Aware of how important true friends are, Em also paid tribute along the way to his best pal, Proof, as well as hip-hop hook king Nate Dogg with a run through "'Till I Collapse."

For a man known to sometimes say unkind, murderous things about females, Eminem had no complaints from the very attentive women in the house when he dedicated "Love the Way You Lie" to all the ladies who've been in dysfunctional relationships. In fact, the camera frequently zoomed in on sweat-soaked, moon-eyed girls right up front who were happy to help fill in for a missing Rihanna on the chorus.

Since she was already in the area after performing an intense, cathartic solo set earlier in the day on a side stage, it was no surprise that Skylar Grey came out to sing her angelic chorus on "I Need a Doctor."

Em then brought it home with a flurry of hits, ending the set with a quick run through "My Name Is," "The Real Slim Shady," "Without Me" and "Not Afraid." By the time the lights went down after a heated "Lose Yourself," there was no doubt that Eminem came, saw and conquered his Lollapalooza debut.

Daniel Radcliffe Compares 'Harry Potter' To 'Star Wars'

In this 'Deathly Hallows, Part 2' Blu-ray exclusive, Radcliffe says literary beginnings set 'Potter' apart from other film franchises.

He's the Boy Who Lived. And lived. And lived.

The "Harry Potter" film franchise has come to a close — taking with it $1.3 billion and counting at the international box office for the final part of "Deathly Hallows" — but the bespectacled wizard and his friends and foes are neither gone nor forgotten. There are still Blu-rays to nab, fresh footage to consume and things to learn about the series.

In an exclusive clip from the upcoming Blu-ray release of "Deathly Hallows, Part 2," which Warner Bros. just announced will be hitting shelves November 11, Daniel Radcliffe pointed out how J.K. Rowling's book series has given rise to an entire new generation of young people with a love of literature — something other big franchises cannot claim.

"I always think that that's one of the wonderful things about 'Potter' and the 'Potter' fanbase," Radcliffe says. "If you think about the other big costume-wearing [franchises] that go with it, things like 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek,' with 'Potter,' because it started off as a literary thing, has created a generation of the same kind of mentality ... with an appetite for reading and literature, which is kind of amazing."

Radcliffe's comments are included in a special Blu-ray featurette presenting a never-before-seen conversation between the actor and Rowling herself. That's one extra on the new release, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage and a preview of Pottermore, Rowling's online "Harry Potter" experience.

Start your pre-ordering now! Because 10 years into the franchise's run, fans still can't get enough of all things "Potter." Neither can Radcliffe, not even when the franchise intrudes into his post-"Potter" career, as it did at the end of a performance of his Broadway musical, "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

"Somebody shouted, 'You're a wizard, Harry!' [during the end of a 'How to Succeed' performance], and I just went, in a way, 'I'm kind of annoyed at you right now, but on the other hand, you've done quite well to restrain yourself for two and a half hours and not shout that in the middle of the show,' so I kind of have to be grateful," Radcliffe told us this past spring.

Miley Cyrus Snapped Stumbling Because Of Paparazzi Lights

'Party in the U.S.A.' star was blinded by flashes after meeting with producer Dr. Luke, sources tell MTV News.

When photos of Miley Cyrus outside of Hollywood's Chateau Marmont hit the Internet on Tuesday (March 15), gossip blogs claimed the star was stumbling around the L.A.-area hotspot after a night of partying. But sources close to Cyrus tell MTV News the rumors are all wrong.

Miley was in a meeting with producer Dr. Luke at the hotel, where they discussed writing music for other artists. Luke and Cyrus worked together on her hit "Party in the U.S.A." According to sources, the teen superstar was actually blinded by the flashing lights of the paparazzi, not stumbling, as had been reported earlier on Tuesday.

Last week, Cyrus made headlines defending her mom against paparazzi gathered outside of the California Chicken Cafe in West Hollywood, California. She confronted one of the photographers, telling him, "You just hit my mom with your camera, don't you ever do that again. You just almost hurt my mom. Don't you ever even think about it, for real."

Cyrus has often expressed her displeasure with the celebrity photogs. "I just [want] people to know, I think in pictures I always look upset. It's because these cameras are following me. I just think it's really kind of unfair," she shared in a September video blog.

"I know there are some people that maybe like that attention, but I'm not one of them. I really just want to be able to go on walks and enjoy where I live. ... The paparazzi really frustrate me, and it makes me really upset that I'm being followed around by men that I don't know, and for anyone else, it would be considered stalking. I don't know who those guys are. I don't know if they're good guys or bad guys. I don't necessarily care; I don't want anyone following me."

In spite of the unwanted media attention, Cyrus is already having a good 2011. She recently showed off her funny side as a host on "Saturday Night Live" and she has two flicks, "LOL" and "So Undercover," set for release this year.

Daniel Craig Recalls 'Dragon Tattoo' Auditions For Lisbeth

Star of David Fincher's film says Rooney Mara was 'just spot-on' as bad-girl hacker.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Come on: Rooney Mara is Lisbeth Salander, or as close to the "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" hacker as anyone born outside of Scandinavia could possibly be.

We didn't need to see the latest, longest "Tattoo" trailer to be convinced the previously under-the-radar actress had transformed herself from a girl-next-door type to a worthy big-screen heir not only to the badass in Stieg Larsson's novel but to Noomi Rapace, who played Salander in the Swedish trilogy. We were sold after the first eye-popping photos of Mara in character appeared in January.

Co-star Daniel Craig needed little convincing, as well, even though Mara was reportedly competing for the role with some of the biggest names in Hollywood — everyone from Natalie Portman to Kristen Stewart.

"I think I knew pretty early on. I screen-tested with her a couple times and I saw exactly what [director] David [Fincher] was after with her," Craig told us. "If you read the books, she's just spot-on. Rooney herself is actually really rounded and normal — she's not boring, honestly — but she had to bring this very broken human being to life and she did it brilliantly."

We were chatting with Craig as he promoted "The Adventures of Tintin," Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's motion-capture adaptation of the classic French-language comic book series. While the actor spoke glowingly of the film, and previously raved to us about collaborating with Fincher on "Dragon Tattoo,", he confessed to having zero interest in reuniting with Fincher on his next effort, an adaptation of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," which will reportedly rely heavily on mo-cap technology.

"He's got all sorts of things lined up, and I do not want to be on that production," Craig said. "I will go and visit them. It would be a great film to watch."
