Bret Michaels Denies Affair With Miley Cyrus' Mom

'The answer is no,' the singer explicitly said of affair rumors.

As soon as news broke that Miley Cyrus' parents, Billy Ray and Tish, had separated, rumors began to circulate that one of the causes for the split was an affair that Tish reportedly had with Bret Michaels. Now Michaels is speaking out about the rumors, denying there is any truth to them.

"The answer is no," the singer said when he appeared on "Fox & Friends." "I've been friends with her family forever," Michaels explained, according to People.com. "It started out with me and Miley simply working on a song together. Her mom, Tish, likes 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn,' the first concert Miley ever saw was Poison, and so they wanted to remake it for the new record. ... When I was in the studio, Miley came in and sang on my song ... and that was it."

The pair, who have five children together, announced the split late last month. "As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family," they said in a statement. "We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers."

Michaels, who has worked with Miley on two songs, has been open about his friendship with the Cyrus family and has praised the teen star for her musical abilities. "She's one of the few musicians — and I want to use that word 'cause she can actually play and sing — she's one of the few people who can pull it off," he said of Cyrus' cover of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." "And give it her own flare and make it sound good," he added.

Miley Cyrus Offers 'Forgiveness And Love' During AMA Performance

Pop star performs mid-tempo ballad on Sunday after reports she would sing Poison cover 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn.'

Maybe it was Miley Cyrus' take on her parents' recently announced split or perhaps it was just a breather from her recent spate of provocative awards-show numbers. But the singer slowed things down with her mid-tempo balled "Forgiveness and Love" at the American Music Awards on Sunday night (November 21). In a demure, long-sleeve black dress, the teen sensation belted out the track on a candlelit stage.

"The only thing that our hearts are made of/ Are the acts of forgiveness and love/ The only thing real, when push comes to shove/ Are the acts of forgiveness and love," she sang.

After the song ended, cameras caught the singer's mom. (Michaels has denied the rumors.) Tish, smiling and clapping from her seat in the audience. According to online reports, Cyrus was to perform her cover of Poison's classic "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," but backed out after rumors surfaced that the band's frontman, Bret Michaels, had an affair with the singer's mom.

With the singer's 18th birthday just around the corner, Cyrus recently told MTV News that she hopes to have her family together for the big occasion.

"I'm not going to go crazy; [just] have a fun party and then maybe take a vacation with my family ... because that would be really cool. I think we need time to all be together," she said. "So that would be rad if we could all go to the beach or something. ... [I have] no idea [where we're going]; somewhere near water. I'm a water baby; I have to be near the water and I love doing scuba and going out and being on a boat."

What did you think of Miley's performance? Sound off in the comments below!

'Tourist' Star Angelina Jolie Talks Catwoman, Working With Brad Pitt

During our rapid-fire questions, MTV News also asks about Lady Gaga, 'American Idol' and retirement.

It's time to play "Address That Rumor" with Angelina Jolie!

Interviews with the Oscar winner don't come along every day, and when you actually have the opportunity to chat with her, you've got to maximize your time. Thus, when MTV News sat down with Jolie in Paris while she was promoting "The Tourist," we took the opportunity to throw out some rapid-fire questions about upcoming projects, persistent rumors and pop-culture preferences. OK, Angie, let's get down to business!

Rumor has it that your husband, Brad Pitt, is going to have a cameo in your directorial debut, a drama set during the Bosnian war. True or false?

Jolie: "Possibly."

Cryptic! Moving on: There's another Jolie/Pitt rumor floating around the Web, this one that you guys will reunite onscreen for "The Tiger," possibly directed by "Black Swan" helmer Darren Aronofsky. Yes or no?

Jolie: "I don't really know much about that, but I love Darren Aronofsky."

Fair enough. Christopher Nolan is hard at work on his third "Batman" film, "The Dark Knight Rises," and the Internet has decided you'd be perfect to play Catwoman. Whatcha think?

Jolie: "I haven't heard anything about it, but I thought they did it."

Well, yes — once with Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" and again with Halle Berry in 2004's "Catwoman" — but never in Nolan's version of the franchise.

Jolie: "I see. Thank you. Flattering."

Enough with rumors, Miss Jolie. Let's talk about leisure-time activities: Do you prefer "American Idol" or "The X Factor"?

Jolie: "I'm not really familiar with both. I would assume 'X Factor'? But I'm not sure what I'm saying!"

Oh, awkward. We promise we're almost done! Lady Gaga or Kanye West?

Jolie: "Ask my kids!"

Lame! And finally, when it comes down to it, will you ever retire or will you act to the bitter end?

Jolie: "Retirement. Certainly not act to the bitter end. I'd like to think I'd do other things."

Check out everything we've got on "The Tourist."

Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Eminem Top Amazon's Year-End Sales Lists

Lady Antebellum, Arcade Fire, Bruno Mars also ranked high on e-commerce retailer's charts.

Hip-hop ranked high on Amazon's best-selling singles list for 2010, with Eminem and Nelly notching top spots, while country music reigned supreme on the best-selling albums list as Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum took the top two positions.

Katy Perry's "California Gurls" featuring Snoop Dogg took the top spot on the singles list. Rihanna appears on that list twice, as a collaborator on Em's "Love the Way You Lie," which landed at #2 behind Perry, and with "Only Girl (In the World)," which came in at #7. Bruno Mars ("Just the Way You Are"), Nelly ("Just a Dream") and Enrique Iglesias ("I Like It," featuring Pitbull) round out the top five singles list.

The e-commerce retailer released its year-end list of the top 20 best-selling music albums and singles for the sixth consecutive year.

Grammy contenders Taylor Swift (Speak Now) and Lady Antebellum (Need You Now) were the top two sellers on the albums list. Arcade Fire (The Suburbs), Susan Boyle (The Gift) and Eminem (Recovery) complete the top five.

Earlier this week, iTunes also released its year-end list: Em topped the albums list with Recovery and Train topped the singles list with "Hey Soul Sister."

The Detroit MC certainly had a good 2010. He was named MTV News' Hottest MC in the Game in October, and his "Love the Way You Lie" was named the #9 song of the year in our list of the top 25 songs of 2010.

Angelina Jolie's Bosnian War Film Producer Brushes Off Controversy

Producing partner Graham King also tells MTV News that when he visited the set, first-time director Jolie had 'total command of that crew.'
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Last week, Angelina Jolie hit back against criticism of her still-untitled Bosnian War drama, which has been the focus of complaints by a women's group, by simply saying, "There's one person who has a gripe."

Jolie's producing partner on the film, Graham King, echoed that sentiment when he told MTV News recently that the criticism has received too much attention. "Yeah, a little bit," he said, laughing.

At issue has been a rumored plot line said to involve a rape victim falling in love with her captor. A rep for Jolie has already said there is no such story line, though the full plot remains shrouded in mystery.

"There are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters, and that will be revealed once the film is released," Jolie said.

Nonetheless, the controversy has persisted, with Bakira Hasecic, the president of the Association of Women Victims of War, filing a complaint about the movie with the United Nations refugee agency.

When we sat down with King in Paris, where he was promoting "The Tourist" (another project of his in which Jolie stars), the producer was not only quick to dismiss the criticism but also to speak highly of Jolie's work on her directorial debut.

"I went to that set two weeks ago, and she had total command of that crew," he said. "It was just a real joy to see her behind that monitor, and I think it's going to be a really good piece of material."

Whether Brad Pitt will play a part remains to be seen. Recent reports have suggested Jolie's husband will pop up in a cameo. All Jolie would tell us in Paris was "Possibly," and King was similarly cagey: "We'll see," he said.

Ke$ha Reflects On 'Really Intense' Breakout Year

Billboard cover girl is the magazine's Hot 100 Artist of the Year.
By James Dinh

She was overlooked by the Grammys, but Ke$ha dominated radio and the charts in 2010 with her Auto-Tuned electro-pop and a distinctive "garbage chic" style that had everybody talking.

In the latest issue of Billboard, the party-girl pop star opens up about her whirlwind rise to the top, saying she has no regrets about her breakthrough year.

"Are you kidding me? I pretty much feel like I've been reborn into this completely different existence," the singer told the magazine when asked how life had changed for her. "My entire life has become making music and playing shows, and I love it. I've accepted the fact that my fans are now my family, and I won't be having boyfriends. I'll just be having a really amazing relationship with the radio."

The pop star said that although she "wasn't clueless" about what fame might bring, it far exceeded her expectations. "It's just not at all what I expected it to be like," she said. "It's really intense, more intense than I ever thought it would be."

Recalling paparazzi chasing her as she made her arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, Ke$ha said, "I was having an anxiety attack, like, 'I just wrote some pop songs, man!' "

Ke$ha, who graces the mag's cover wearing a crown as she pops a bottle of champagne, also talked about her big debut single, saying, "Sometimes I need to remind myself that 'Tik Tok' only went to #1 in January, because it kind of feels like it was 17 years ago."

The mag went on to ask if "Tik Tok" was the best way to introduced herself to the public. "I don't know. We didn't really know which song to come out with first," Ke$ha said. "It was kind of a debate, because I didn't initially come out as a rapper; I've always been a singer. So having my first single classified as kind of a rap song felt bizarre to me. But now it's become something of a trademark, and it's becoming more legitimate. I've talked to some of my favorite rap artists over the past year — artists who are idols — and they've given me mad props."

What was your favorite Ke$ha moment of 2010? Tell us in the comments!

Nicki Minaj Calls 'Roman's Revenge' With Eminem Her 'Coming-Out Record'

MC plays coy when asked by Power 105's DJ Clue who the blistering Pink Friday track is aimed at.
By Jayson Rodriguez

When Nicki Minaj was wrapping up Pink Friday, there was one last song she needed to finish: a track Swizz Beatz had sent her way that she was having trouble finishing. But after securing Eminem for what would become "Roman's Revenge," she was able to breathe easy.

"That was my coming-out record," she told Power 105 radio host DJ Clue in an interview airing later Tuesday night (November 23).

All the pressure of putting together her album was in the past by the time she recorded "Roman's Revenge," Minaj said, so she was free.

She secured Kanye West, Drake, Rihanna and more A-listers for the project, but the Queens lyricist more than held her own. On the blistering track, she delivers jaw-dropping lines that many have translated as an attack against Lil' Kim. But the femcee has downplayed the tension between the two, letting the track speak for itself.

When Clue pressed her about the reason for the rift during the interview, Minaj said she has moved beyond any lingering issues the two may have had. "I don't even want to discuss it anymore," she said. "That's water under the bridge. I don't think about it, only when people bring it up."

Nicki was a little more aggressive when asked about Kim in an interview Monday with New York's Hot 97. "When you see Gaga, you see Madonna — but Madonna never hated on Gaga," Nicki said. "Why in the black community we gotta hate on each other instead of saying, 'Thank you for showing me love, thank you for keeping my name alive'? The same way she opened doors for me, I'm opening doors for her. Nobody was playin' your music and you damn sure couldn't get an interview to save your life. You getting interviews, and every time you do interviews they're asking you about Nicki Minaj. So it's like we help each other. That's the point, we're helping each other. But if you are bitter, get a life."

Don't miss the documentary "Nicki Minaj: My Time Now," premiering Sunday, November 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!

Beliebers, get ready to whip your hair. Willow Smith announced on Wednesday (November 8) that she'll be joining Justin Bieber on the European leg of his My World Tour, which begins in March.

The 10-year-old Roc Nation star took to Twitter to dish about hitting the road with the teen sensation: "Got news that my big bro @justinbieber invited me on his European Tour in March.so exciting! Maybe I'll let Jaden come..LOL #NEVERSAYNEVER."

But the addition of Willow to the European trek lineup may not be the only surprise Bieber has up his sleeve. Shortly after Smith's tweet, Bieber re-tweeted her message and replied, "@OfficialWillow get ready...i got more surprises coming. #MYWORLDTOUR."

But before Smith teams up with the Canadian pop star, the 10-year-old will celebrate the end of her roller-coaster year with an appearance on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2011."

Earlier this year, Bieber collaborated with Willow's older brother Jaden on a song for the soundtrack to Jaden's "The Karate Kid" remake. The video for Bieber's "Never Say Never" showed the duo recording the track in a studio.

Are you excited to hear that Willow will be opening up for Justin? Tell us in the comments!

Katy Perry Praises Lady Gaga, Ke$ha In Maxim

The 'Firework' singer reveals, 'I've known Ke$ha forever. She's actually in the 'I Kissed a Girl' video.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Everyone knows that Katy Perry is besties with Rihanna, so it might not be too surprising that Perry has only the kindest words for fellow female pop contemporaries Ke$ha and Lady Gaga, even if she has been critical of one of those women's artistic choices in the past.

"I love what Gaga is doing, and I love what Ke$ha is doing," Perry says in Maxim's new issue, for which she also serves as the cover girl. "I've known Ke$ha forever. She's actually in the 'I Kissed a Girl' video."

But, Perry isn't just dishing on her fellow lady celebrities, she's also showing some love for the fellas, one of whom she married in the fall. "I've said Justin Bieber [was my celebrity crush] quite a few times, but I think I'm over it now. I think it's probably safe to say I married my celebrity crush," the singer shares about husband Russell Brand. "Don't barf on this magazine."

Earlier this year, Perry was chosen to top Maxim's 2010 Hot 100 list, and she admits that the honor has really given her cred all over the place.

"It's a worldwide thing — the rest of the world makes it their standard," she says. "It's one of the questions they ask me in all interviews now, even in places where Maxim doesn't exist. I'll go to Timbuktu, and they'll be like, 'You're the #1 hottest,' and I'm like, 'Maxim said so, but thank you so much for saying so in Timbuktu.' "

So, what does Perry think makes ladies sexy? A fun-loving attitude, obviously.

"The way she presents herself and the air she has about her. You can feel her power and her confidence," Perry explains. "Also, the way she uses her ability to communicate, her brain and personality. I think that's really sexy because you all know the hottest woman can be the biggest bitch, and that's not cool."

Still riding high on the success of her Teenage Dream album, Perry shows no signs of slowing down, with a 2011 tour and a role in the "Smurfs" film on the way.

"You know, I wasn't allowed to watch 'Smurfs' growing up, ever. I grew up in a sheltered household, and my parents would keep us from certain things they thought were too much for us and our eyes," she recently told MTV News regarding her role as Smurfette. " 'Smurfs' had what my parents said was a lot of sorcery and magic."

While Katy Perry and "Glee" guest star Darren Criss have both had chart success with Perry's "Teenage Dream," the two had yet to perform the track together. Criss originally performed the tune on the hit Fox show, while Perry released it earlier this year as the second single from her album of the same name.

The two finally took the stage together for the first time at the Trevor LIVE annual fundraising event held at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday night. Criss, dressed in a suit, was performing the track with the show's Dalton Academy Warblers, when Perry, dressed in a sequin dress, hit the stage to belt out the last bit of the tune. Footage of the performance hit the Net shortly after the event.

Other performances for the night included a spoken-word number from Queen Latifah as well as the Hollywood Bowl cast of "Rent" singing "Seasons of Love" and "Will I." Kathy Griffin was honored by "Glee" star Jane Lynch for donating her paycheck from an L.A.-area stand-up gig to the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

Some of the other names in attendance included Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Arquette, Sarah Silverman, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Kate Walsh, Wayne Brady, Justin Long, Joe Manganiello, Kristin Davis, Brittany Snow, Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, Josh Duhamel, Anna Kendrick, James Marsden and Jessica Alba.

"She's been really sweet," Criss said of Perry's support after his "Teenage Dream" performance on "Glee." " ... It's a great tune. I really lucked out that I got to sing that song. I mean, you've gotta sing what they give you."

Whose version of "Teenage Dream" do you prefer: Katy's or Darren's? Or do you prefer their joint version? Let us know in the comments!

'Transformers: Dark Of The Moon' Trailer: What Does It Mean?

We decode the explosion-free teaser set around the historic 1969 mission to the moon.
By Eric Ditzian

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon"
Photo: Paramount Pictures

No explosions? No Shia LaBeouf? Is this Michael Bay's "Transformers" we're peeping?

Well, yes it is, and we've seen it before. Michael Bay's brand-new, moon-centric teaser trailer for "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is distinctly reminiscent of the director's first trailer for the 2007 original film, which similarly featured a rather startling discovery on a massive outer-space rock: a NASA probe lands on Mars in 2003, only to be destroyed by one nasty 'bot.

Shia and the explosions will come in due time, as will the first official footage of Megan Fox's replacement in the franchise, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. For now, let's dive into the new trailer and try to suss out exactly what's happening.

The clip is set around the historic 1969 mission to the moon, but inserts a bit of alternate history: Neil Armstrong and his fellow spacemen encounter a crashed Transformers ship. Are they discovering such 'bots for the first time? Have they seen such machines before? The encounter has left some fans confused about the timeline of events within the franchise's mythology, so let's see if we can figure out what's going on.

We learn in the first film that Sam Witwicky's (LaBeouf) great-great-grandfather discovered a robot during an Arctic mission in the late-19th century, leading to the eventual construction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s as a way to hide the presence of nefarious Decepticon head honcho Megatron. Clearly, then, the astronauts and their government backers know Transformers exist. And after watching the new trailer a few times, it seems to us that the driving force behind the Apollo 11 moon mission was not solely to walk where mankind had never walked before but to figure out just what the heck was going on up there.

As soon as the astronauts find themselves on the dark side of the moon and cut off from communication with Earth, a mission control official says, "Mission is a go. You have 21 minutes." Thus it seems, at the very least, NASA knew it was going to encounter something up there, that they had some indication of the presence of something odd on the surface. Whether they knew it was Transformers-related or not remains to be seen. But the key point is that this new trailer isn't trying to suggest the '69 mission was humanity's first encounter with the alien robots. Similarly, the original teaser trailer wasn't meant to imply that the encounter with the 'bots on Mars was our first clue about their existence.

Now, about that robot the astronauts encounter. Just which one is it? Savvy Web speculators seem to agree its Alpha Trion. The giveaway is that mechanized fu Manchu. In pre-movie franchise mythology, Alpha Trion is one of the 13 original Transformers created by the god Primus. But Bay's series tweaked this backstory, focusing on the AllSpark rather than Primus as the all-important life-giving force. So how exactly Alpha Trion fits into the "Dark of the Moon" tale remains an open question.

We've known for a while, though, that the new flick would dive deep into what Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner told us is the characters' "core mythology."

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura further explicated the mythological direction of the movie in conversation in April.

"We are going to continue to explore the past in the third one and that will continue to inform the present," he told us. "I think it's pretty much the same thing we did on the first two: You try to get as close as you can to the lore and sometimes you run into pieces where there's not enough information to make a judgment, so you make your own call. That's a necessary component. By and large, the fans have accepted and embraced what we've been doing."

Check out everything we've got on "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

James Cameron may no longer be attached to a new big-screen adaptation of Cleopatra's life, but "The Tourist" star Angelina Jolie is still considering tackling the tale of the complex Egyptian ruler. While there hasn't been much progress on the news front for that film, Jolie expressed her excitement about the idea of taking on the role once famously played by Elizabeth Taylor.

"I hope to one day [play her], but we don't have it all together," she told MTV News at the New York premiere of "The Tourist," where she was joined by her co-stars Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany, as well as her beau, Brad Pitt. "All the pieces are not together."

Jolie said that if everything does eventually fall into place (rumor has it real-life love Brad Pitt may play the part paralleling Richard Burton's role in the Taylor film), she thinks there will be a great story to tell. "I think there's a lot about her history that's not been explored and properly done," she added.

Egyptian queen Cleopatra had a steamy love affair with Roman leader Mark Antony that ended with both committing suicide.

Cameron also recently spoke of his excitement about Jolie potentially playing the part. "There's a Cleopatra project in the works, meaning that it's been in development at Sony," he explained about the Brian Helgeland-penned script. Helgeland won an Oscar for his adaptation of "L.A. Confidential."

"And it's a subject that's always fascinated me. So yeah, I've been talking to them about it but no decisions have been made. But it sounds hot, doesn't it? I mean, Angelina Jolie and Cleopatra? To me, that's like a slam dunk. Whether I wind up doing it or not, I think it's going to be a great project," the "Avatar" director said.

Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Paramore Salute Troops At 'VH1 Divas'

Keri Hilson, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals rock tribute-show stage.

NEW YORK — Who says there's no room for divas in the military? On Friday night, VH1 brought out the big guns in female music — plus their male backed bands — for "VH1 Divas Salute the Troops," taped at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Keri Hilson, Paramore, Sugarland, Heart and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals all performed for the troops, along with special celebrity appearances.

Set in a large air hangar, hostess Kathy Griffin made a grand entrance atop a missile flanked by Marines, wearing nothing but a camouflage bikini. She set the tone for the night by reading the official USO rules for entertainers, and then proceeded to break every single one. Of course, the sharp-tongued comedian pointed out the divas that couldn't be there: Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber. "Turns out he's a dude," Griffin joked.

(Click here to see photos from "VH1 Divas Salute The Troops".)

The night's first performance actually took place across the globe. Paramore taped their portion at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. Hayley Williams (rocking cotton candy-colored hair) and company belted out "The Only Exception."

Back in San Diego, the show really got started with pop pinup Katy Perry. Hanging from a harness that looked like an American flag parachute, Katy floated over the crowd while performing "California Gurls." Decked out in full patriotic gear, Katy followed with "Teenage Dream" and "Hot and Cold."

Next up were Sugarland, who were introduced by supermodel Marissa Miller and a special serviceman, Sugarland vocalist Jennifer Nettles' brother. The country duo performed "Stuck Like Glue" with MC Lyte, and continued with "Tonight" and "All I Want to Do."

Griffin returned with the biggest crowd favorites, "Jersey Shore" stars Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino. Griffin dubbed Snooki "Agent Orange" and made Mike agree to stay away from grenades. But really, they were there to introduce one of the standout performers of the night: newcomers Grace Potter & The Nocturnals.

Grace and her band started with the opening licks of the "Top Gun" theme song — after all, this was the same base where the classic '80s flick was filmed. Decked out in a shimmery short dress and commanding a creamy flying V guitar, Grace jumped into "Paris (Ooh La La)" and "Medicine" before being joined by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart for their classic "Crazy on You." They closed out the set with a rousing rendition of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."

Next was Nicki Minaj, straight from the pages of an anime comic book. Rocking a curly pink wig, red and blue graphic dress and matching mint-green leggings and heels, the diva MC tore through her Pink Friday hits "Moment 4 Life," "Right Thru Me" and "Roman's Revenge."

But before Nicki was finished she was joined by Perry for a playful performance of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Following the cover theme, Paramore were back in Kuwait with an epic rendition of the Foo Fighters' anthem "My Hero."

Keri Hilson kept the energy high with an aggressive performance of "Turning Me On," following with "Knock You Down" and "Pretty Girl Rock." She then joined Sugarland to cover Aretha Franklin's "Think."

Perry closed out the show in true diva form, with an explosive performance of "Firework," complete with a massive spectacle of, well, fireworks. She dedicated the song to everyone serving in the military around the world. And just at that moment the camera spotted a Marine hoisting a sign that read "Katy, you're our firework."

Miley Cyrus Is Learning 'Street Fighting' For 'So Undercover'

'I have a trainer and I have bruises everywhere,' she tells MTV News about prepping to play a badass FBI agent.
By James Montgomery

Last week we learned that for her new film "So Undercover," Miley Cyrus will take on the part of "a tough, street-smart private eye hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority." And while that description is accurate — and sort of awesome — it also sells the role short.

As Cyrus explained to MTV News backstage at the 2010 Europe Music Awards, her character is a whole lot more than just a private eye.

"She's basically this chick who grows up as a super tomboy, and she's an FBI agent and gets thrown into a bunch of girls that she doesn't understand because she's been around her dad, who's been in the FBI his whole life," Cyrus told us in Madrid. "And basically, by having to go undercover and be someone that she's not, she kind of finds the person she is, because she realizes she doesn't have to carry the weight on her shoulder of what her dad was, and she can be her own person."

And while there's depth to the role, Cyrus is also the first to admit that there are plenty of other perks that came along with it, namely, access to a trainer who's in the process of turning her into a badass street fighter, complete with an arsenal of moves that she'd probably love to unleash on a pesky paparazzo or two.

"I've been actually doing all kinds of stuff. ... I've been doing fighting, like learning how to box ... mostly like street fighting, so knowing how to, like, if someone comes up from behind you, being able to defend yourself," she said. "I have a trainer and I have bruises everywhere from, like, kicking the bags. ... And I've learned how to use guns, which was really scary," Cyrus admitted. "I cried the first time, I was like, 'I'm not doing this ... can't do this movie,' [but] then you get used to it, you get used to the feeling. You get used to, like, dropping, like he'll like point it at you and you've got to drop down real quick and grab your weapon and come back up. It's been really insane, so, it's a more fun workout than running on a treadmill."

Production on "So Undercover" begins in December, which means that, between now and then, Cyrus is only going to get tougher and tougher — and that's bad news for anyone who's thinking of crossing her.

"I want to learn how to do most of my own stuff," she smiled. "Just for normal life, I think every woman should know a little self-defense."

Consider yourself warned.

What do you think of Miley's next movie role? Tell us in the comments!

'Black Swan': The Reviews Are In!

One critic gushes that the psychological drama and its star, Natalie Portman, are 'unmissable and unforgettable.'
By Eric Ditzian

Natalie Portman in "Black Swan"
Photo: Fox Searchlight

Only folks in eight select major metropolitan cities across North America will have a chance to see "Black Swan" this weekend. And as for the weekend after that, unless you're a proud resident of, say, Detroit or happen to be swooping into St Louis for a little holiday, you'll still be out of luck. The rest of the country will have to wait a full two weeks from now, as Fox Searchlight slowly rolls out this Oscar darling about the ultra-competitive world of professional ballet.

Is it any consolation to say that even if you can't see "Black Swan" this weekend, you can at least read the thoughts of those who have? Well, you can, because reviews for Darren Aronofsky's follow-up to "The Wrestler" have been pouring in. Here's what the critics are saying about "Black Swan."

The Story

"Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) has obsessively perfected her flawless technique at an unnamed New York company for years when she's finally considered for the lead in an upcoming production of 'Swan Lake.' As her manipulative artistic director, Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel), observes, Nina possesses all the innocence and self-control of the Swan Queen, but his 'stripped-down, visceral' version of the ballet demands that she also portray the Black Queen. She's a sinuous, primal persona he doesn't think Nina can pull off. It's difficult to disagree: With her breathy whisper of a voice, cosseted home life with overprotective mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) and wide-eyed sexual naïveté, Nina remains a child-woman swaddled in feathery scarves and downy pink shrugs. What's more, a tattooed ingenue named Lily (Mila Kunis, in a smashing breakout performance) has just joined the company, presenting a loose-limbed, smoky-eyed threat to Nina's tightly wound rectitude." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Performances

"Portman's performance is a revelation from this actress who was a 13-year-old charmer in 'Beautiful Girls' (1996). She has never played a character this obsessed before, and never faced a greater physical challenge (she prepared by training for 10 months). Somehow she goes over the top and yet stays in character: Even at the extremes, you don't catch her acting. The other actors are like dance partners holding her aloft. Barbara Hershey provides a perfectly calibrated performance as a mother whose love is real, whose shortcomings are not signaled, whose own perfectionism has all been focused on the creation of her daughter." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Direction

"As for Aronosfky, this is the stripped down and gritty director he became for 'The Wrestler,' on display yet again to showcase yet another amazing individual performance. 'Black Swan' is eerily beautiful in its best moments, but if you've seen Aronofsky's older work, you know he's capable of even more complex and layered visual wizardry. Instead he's restrained, for the most part letting the film's haunting performance from Portman speak for itself, resorting to visual trickery only in careful measure." — Josh Tyler, Cinema Blend

The Dissenters

"There's something demented about 'Black Swan' and not in a good way. It's excessive and psychologically imprecise, coarse where it should be refined and too much like a David Cronenberg horror movie in places where restraint and intellectual rigor are called for ... The line between realized artistry and mental disorder can be blurry, and this is where the filmmakers, particularly Aronofsky, lose control and come near turning 'Black Swan' into a full-blown psycho movie. Every object becomes a potential weapon. Blood is everywhere. Yet the more flamboyant the movie gets, the less dramatic, and the movie's lack of clarity in its fundamental psychological terms becomes a letdown. Yes, she's cracking up, but how she's cracking up becomes muddled." — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The Final Word

"In lesser hands, the plot could be campy soapsuds. OK, sometimes it is. But Aronofsky, taking off from a script by Mark Heyman, Andres Heinz and John J. McLaughlin, is a fearless visionary ... 'Black Swan' is a high-wire act for Aronofsky and Portman as they lure us into Nina's tormented mind. The swirling hand-held camerawork of Matthew Libatique, coupled with a Clint Mansell score that channels Tchaikovsky's ecstatic dread, adds to the whirlwind. At the center of it all is Portman. The actress, 29, trained in ballet as a child and drilled hard for nearly a year to master the choreography and do most of her own dancing. Portman's portrait of an artist under siege is unmissable and unforgettable. So is the movie. You won't know what hit you." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
