Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year
Alison Krauss and Robert Plant accept the award for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards on Sunday

"I'm bewildered," Robert Plant said onstage as he accepted the Grammy Album of the Year award with Alison Krauss on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."
He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because Raising Sand, which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect Grammy album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.
You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his Led Zeppelin days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.
Really, she's the key to Sand's success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, Sand was released.
And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.
And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on Sand. His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.
To date, Sand has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.
One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album.
"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really good record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards."

Audrina Patridge Dodges 'Dancing With The Stars' Partner Rumors
Audrina Patridge

On the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars," Audrina Patridge is leaving "The Hills" behind to get her groove on. While it's still a big secret who she might be dancing with when the show kicks off September 20, when she stopped by to chat with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show Tuesday morning (August 31), she couldn't be convinced to comment on the rumors that she might be dancing with pro Tony Dovolani.
"I can't tell you who my partner is," she said, adding that if people think it might be Dovolani because he is tall, she made the case for one of the other dancers as well. "[Maksim Chmerkovskiy is] tall too. There's some tall guys." Regarding recent gossip that she's dating Chmerkovskiy, she said, "Oh my God! It's just the beginning, and look already!"
Patridge also weighed in on her competition, which includes David Hasselhoff and "Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino. Who would she prefer as her partner? "The Hoff!"
Seacrest asked Patridge if she knew of fellow contestant Michael Bolton: "I do know who he is. ... I'm not that young!
"I'm really excited. I met everybody last night for the first time, and ["Brady Bunch" star] Florence [Henderson] is so funny," she added.
Partridge said she's already started rehearsing, and after a photo shoot Tuesday, she will hit the floor again to prep for the big show. But she noted that she doesn't have a lot of dancing experience. "I'll go out with my girlfriends and dance," she said. "When I was a little girl, my mom put me and my sister in ballet, jazz and tap."
Fellow "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Bristol Palin spoke to "Good Morning America" on Tuesday, revealing that her partner is Mark Ballas. More partners are expected to be announced Wednesday on "GMA."

Britney Spears Set To Appear On 'Glee'
Britney Spears

Lady Gaga: Check. Madonna: Check. "Glee" has featured the music of the pop stars to acclaim in its first season. Yet the show has yet to get high-profile singers Madge and Gaga to appear in person on the show. But another diva is about to change that.
On Tuesday (August 10), show creator Ryan Murphy confirmed to Ryan Seacrest that Britney Spears will make an appearance on "Glee." Now, fans are anxious to see what they'll do with the Spears discography in an episode set to air next season.
And the cast seems just as excited as the Gleeks about what's to come. Heather Morris couldn't wait to have Spears on set when MTV News spoke to her at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday.
"I get to do Britney Spears! I'm hearing rumors from other people that she's supposed to be coming ... that'd be so nerve-racking," she said. "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do."
"I mean I can't really give away songs, but I know we've seen pictures of Lea [Michele] in a sports bra," Jenna Ushkowitz added, confirming online reports that Michele would sing the classic Britney tune " ... Baby One More Time."
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the Glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz teased of featured songs. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."
Fans also want to know whether Matthew Morrison will go all the way and shave his head as rumored for the episode. But the only thing he would confirm is that he couldn't confirm anything.
"All rumors," Morrison told us. "I think you might be surprised. I don't think I'll be performing any [songs]. I might sing a little bit of 'Toxic,' " he shared. "I'm not sure. We haven't really got too far in the script yet, which is why I don't know too much about the head-shaving thing."
Morrison's castmate Amber Reilly is already convinced the episode will be great.
"I can tell you it's going to be a really great episode and you're going to love it," she said. "And they're doing the big hits from Britney."

Kanye West Tweets Status Of Justin Bieber Remix
Kanye West
Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage
It didn't take long for the Kanye West-Justin Bieber collaboration to come to fruition. Just days after tweeting about a possible joint project, West let fans know that he's nearly finished remixing Bieber's "Runaway Love."
Early on Thursday (August 19), West tweeted, "Finishing @JustinBieber Runaway Love remix too... don't know when they gonna drop it but Raekwon's verse is crazy!!!"
Prior to jumping on the track, Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon confirmed that he was working toward getting the West-Bieber project off the ground. "It's definitely gonna happen," he told XXL magazine. "When you got these kinda talents merging together to do something exciting, I think it's something that's gonna make the fans check it out. I'm big fans of both of these guys. I think, at the end of the day, shorty is a sensation. And [for him] to acknowledge me, it makes me feel good that the young generation is checkin' me out like that. And at the same time it gives me a position to play a big brother in the game. He wants my assistance or whatever, he can get it. I respect him, I like his style."
Its' been quite a week for Bieber, who re-tweeted Raekwon's XXL confirmation. In addition to having West and Raekwon work their magic on his song, it was just announced that the VMA-nominated singer will also perform at the big show. He tweeted his excitement, saying, "Performing at this years VMA's!!! Last year i went and no one knew who i was and this year gonna PERFORM!!! Wild!! DREAM BIG!"
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.

Britney Spears Tweets A Picture From 'Glee' Set
Britney Spears and her assistant Brett Miller

For fans who may have doubted whether the Britney Spears "Glee" episode is happening, the pop sensation has just provided photographic proof.
The star gave fans a glimpse of her inner-"Gleek" on Wednesday (August 18) by posting a TwitPic of herself next to her assistant Brett Miller, a Spears doppelgänger, both sporting similar specs and wavy blond locks.
After devoting episodes to the dance-floor-filling repertoires of Madonna and Lady Gaga, "Glee" is hard at work bringing Spears' string of hits to William McKinley High. So far, Spears, who makes a cameo in the upcoming episode, is enjoying the process.
"About to do my first shot of the day for Glee tweeties! Here we goooo!" Spears tweeted. The "Circus" singer later added, "What's up GLEEKS? Having so much fun on set!! Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!"
The "Glee" cast is also pumped to turn out Spears' smash-hit catalog. "I get to do Britney Spears!" Heather Morris exclaimed to MTV News earlier this month. "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do."
Jenna Ushkowitz confirmed that Lea Michele would take on Spears' star-making debut hit, " ... Baby One More Time." Aside from Spears' TwitPic — in which she's presumably in costume — and "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy's recent comments that Spears will "kind of" play herself, details about the episode have remained under wraps.
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz hinted about the song selection. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."

Bow Wow Wants To Become An 'Artist's Artist' With Greenlight 3
Bow Wow
Photo: MTV News
Monday's Main Pick
Street Star: Bow Wow
Holding It Down For: Cash Money
Mixtape: Greenlight 3
Real Spit: Bow Wow's Greenlight 3 has a yellow light for now. Bow definitely plans to put it out, but he's delaying it for a couple of weeks. He wanted to let his film "Lottery Ticket" breathe before he dropped his new project.
"It's important for me to do the Greenlight mixtape, because the fans want it. Where I got the title, the whole Greenlight title came from Jermaine [Dupri]," Bow explained. "He was gonna name his album Greenlight. I asked him: 'What you gonna do with it?' I took it and ran with it and created a brand. G1 set the tone. G2, I told you, it did a million downloads in a day. I never knew it was gonna be like that. I didn't know if it's me signing to Cash Money or because it was free. This is the third one, and it's the last one. And it's gonna complete the series.
"Greenlight 3 has 12 original records. It's gonna sound like a brand-new album," he added. "It's easy to take a verse and put it on whatever's hot. To make songs, that's what a lot of artists or MCs have a hard time with. Making records. I did it this time for it to be original, because you see what's going on with Chris [Brown] and the 'Deuces' record. That's off the mixtape, what you think is off an album. I did that intentionally, because I could probably have three singles — which I do. I feel like I got three singles off the G3. G3 is to prepare people of what's to come from the album."
Joints to Check For
» "Why They Hating." "The reasons I had to do that record is because I always felt like I've accomplished more than a lot of cats in hip-hop who get that response, that recognition," Bow answered. "But it's funny, because maybe I don't act as hard as they do, or I don't be talking about certain stuff they be poppin' on their records so people wanna downplay my success. You really can't. There has to be a reason why."
» "A Lot on My Mind." "That's me talking about a lot of real personal situations that I never opened up about in record. I talk about how my girl, I got caught up with a situation with a girl, and she got pregnant. I got the call when I was doing the 'Lottery Ticket' movie. That record is more personal. It deals with issues I'm going with now as a young man. Real-life situations. That's what's interesting about me. I had to find a way [to express myself]. I feel like everybody has a story no matter what. I haven't told my story. I been holding onto it because I been scared. Now, me being at Cash Money, I wanna turn into the artist's artist. I feel like I gotta open up and talk about these things. It's a three-verse record. Each verse deals with something personal within the last two years that you don't know about. It gets crazier when you listen to the whole mixtape."
» "Talk That Sh--." "That's self-explanatory. It's me going off. Doing what I do. Lyrically, I'm just improving. Every mixtape gets better. I'm bringing Jadakiss onboard for the album. Just to have that lyrical push from somebody who is well-respected in hip-hop. Somebody who can give me that perspective or that knowledge I never had. I'm trying to take it to whole new level. Every thing is about greatness with me. Working with great actors. I'm working with Tyler Perry on his next film. It's about working with great people, and hopefully I can take some stuff from those guys."

Britney Spears On Working With Lady Gaga: 'Anything's Possible'
Britney Spears on the cover of <i>Pop</i>
Photo: J-Pop
From schoolgirl to toxic temptress, Britney Spears has played many characters throughout the years. But the singer took a very different approach for her photo spread in the upcoming issue of the U.K.'s Pop magazine by channeling her inner manga character. In the issue, the pop princess dished about the possibilities of a Lady Gaga collaboration and working with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami for the anime-inspired cover.
Despite Gaga overthrowing Spears as the most-followed celebrity on Twitter, the singer had no hard feelings toward pop's newest sensation. "I'm a big fan of hers," she said when asked about working with Gaga. "Anything's possible!"
A collaboration between the pop stars doesn't seem out of the question, as Gaga's mega-hit "Telephone" duet with Beyoncé was originally offered to Spears.
Donning a white wedding dress and a veil with matching gloves, Spears innocently poses in a field of flowers on the cover. In another photo, the singer trades the dress for a leg-baring getup accessorized with a red backpack.
Spears' manga-style shoot was shot by Todd Cole with art direction from Takashi Murakami, who is often referred to as the "Andy Warhol of Japan." While the spread strays from the singer's typical styling, the pop star enjoyed working with the artist. "I loved working with Takashi," she said. "I especially liked how he took high-end fashion and incorporated it with Japanese manga."
The singer's tour to Japan was what originally piqued her interest in Japanese culture. "We looked at a lot of characters and artwork before we shot, so I could get a feel for what he was looking for," she explained. "I was in Japan on my past promo tour, and I loved it."
Editor in Chief Dasha Zhukova spoke to Style.com about the singer's Japanese treatment: "She's feminine, sassy, strong-willed, determined: all the things a great Pop icon should be. Couple that with some Japanese swimsuits and a Rodarte wedding gown, and I think she is pretty much Pop personified!"
Spears couldn't wait to share her excitement for her photo shoot with fans. The pop star took to Twitter, saying, "I just saw the photos for the first time and they are beautiful. Comes out Sept. 1st. Thanks @TakashiPom -- Britney."
Aside from gracing the cover of Pop magazine, the singer has already filmed a cameo for her "Glee" tribute episode and is working on completing the follow-up to 2008's Circus.

Britney Spears Repertoire Has 'Glee' Cast Gleeking Out
"Glee" cast in the Lady Gaga-themed episode
Photo: FOX
The cast of "Glee" are used to mimicking some of the most iconic pop artists of our time, including Lady Gaga and Madonna. And when the show returns for its second season this fall, the castmembers will be gleeking out over another very special pop singer: none other than Britney Spears.
"The reason we're doing it is because so many of the kids on the show say, 'We grew up with Britney. We want to do Britney,' " show creator Ryan Murphy told MTV News about the upcoming Britney-themed episode.
The "You Drive Me Crazy" singer is already slated for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in the episode, meaning that the spotlight won't be on Spears herself. Instead, it's the adoring "Glee" cast's turn to pay tribute to one of their favorite singers, with rumors floating around that leading lady Lea Michele is set to hone in on Britney's schoolgirl days with "... Baby One More Time." And actress Heather Morris told MTV News that she wants to channel her inner "Toxic." But she's not the only castmember making requests.
"I think Kurt would sing 'Circus,' " actor Chris Colfer said when asked about the upcoming Spears-centric episode. "Just so he can wear a top hat."
Amber Riley, who plays the divalicious Mercedes Jones, laughed at Colfer's suggestion, and it's certainly hard to blame her. For her own part, Riley sees "Stronger" as a natural fit for Mercedes' boisterous, self-assured personality. "I like that song," she assessed with a nod.
Still, there are other "Glee" castmembers — like Naya Rivera, for instance — who aren't too concerned about which Britney number they end up covering. At the end of the day, there are more than enough memorable songs to go around for everybody.
"There are so many great Britney songs to choose from, how do you pick just one?" Rivera asked. "My fingers are crossed that my favorites will make the list!"
Which Britney songs would you like the "Glee" cast to perform? Tell us in the comments!

Eminem's Recovery: What Is The Secret Of Its Success?
Eminem
Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage
Eminem is dominating the charts like it's 2000 all over again, when his second album, The Marshall Mathers LP, spent eight weeks at the top spot on Billboard's top 200 and went on to sell 9 million copies in the United States alone. His latest LP, Recovery, isn't as big of a blockbuster just yet, but in the current music-industry climate, it's killing.
The album has spent seven non-consecutive weeks at #1, the first hip-hop act to do so since Outkast's double-LP Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in late 2003/ early 2004. A lot of Eminem's chart success can be attributed to a very old-school source: radio hits. His first two singles, "Not Afraid" and "Love the Way You Lie," have been staples on top 40 stations since they dropped.
"Radio still makes hits, and hits make artists relevant outside of their core consumer base," Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. "That's why you see that aberration in Em's sales on Recovery vs. Relapse. To a 16-year-old, Eminem was bordering on being their older brother/ sister's favorite artist, but 'Love the Way You Lie' has not only re-excited Em's existing fans — now mostly in their mid-20s to mid-40s — but reintroduced him to new generation of teenagers for whom Relapse didn't register."
New York Times music writer Jon Caramanica for thinks Em's fanbase has also been starved. In a sense, they've been waiting for something worth buying from him. "Eminem has been around for long enough to develop different pockets of fans: total loyalists, casual listeners, people who like only specific songs or sorts of songs," he explained. "That he's continuing to sell week after week is reflective of the fact that all of these groups don't get activated at the same time. There are still people out there who might buy an Eminem album but haven't, and each week, it seems, a few more do."
But can Em's reign at the top continue? "I believe Em has a couple more weeks on top of the charts, even if he gets knocked out of #1 a few times before October 1st," Vibe Editorial Director Datwon Thomas said. "He has two mega-concerts where he's headlining a hometown show with Jay-Z in Detroit and then opening for Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium in New York. The amount of media and fan fervor for these events alone will spur people to grab both artists' albums from their respective catalogs. [And] if Em can build on that momentum and release another smash of a hit from this album, he'll be OK well into the holiday season."
Working his album through Christmas seems like it might be an option, if only because his record label, Aftermath/Interscope, appears committed to going the whole 12 rounds with Recovery. "Nowadays, [labels] push [albums] until the first-week sales and then generally abandon ship," Callahan-Bever said. "With Recovery, it's clear that Interscope knew they had a record with legs and went out of their way to push it. 'Love the Way You Lie' just connects to people in that really special, emotive way that only one or two pop songs a year do, and that is just undeniable."
Will Eminem rule the charts until Christmas? Let us know in the comments!

Miley Cyrus Says 'I'm A Huge Fan Of Michael Jackson'
Miley Cyrus
Photo: MTV News
Much like Michael Jackson, Miley Cyrus found fame as a child star. So, on the one-year anniversary of the King of Pop's untimely death, the teen queen reflected on the man who paved the way for the pop stars who followed him. Cyrus wished more people had shared with him how much they appreciated what he did during his life.
"It's just crazy again with the media and all that. Nobody ever wrote an article just to say, 'Hey, Michael, we really appreciate what you do!' " she told MTV News. "I wish I would have had the opportunity [to tell him how I felt about him when he was alive]."
Cyrus added that people tend to remember how great an artist was when they have already passed. "Not enough people told him [how great he was] and I think it's sad that you have to wait till it's too late," she added. "But I think he knows."
The "Can't Be Tamed" singer was never able to meet Jackson and tell him how she felt, but she did pay tribute to him in her own way. During a recent appearance on "Good Morning America," she changed the Jay-Z line in "Party in the U.S.A." to reference MJ. Also, there was one other time that really stood out to her.
"I'm a huge fan of Michael Jackson. When I met Lady Gaga I was wearing a Michael Jackson T-shirt and, for me, that was completely surreal — because the female artist that inspired me and the male artist that inspired me is a lot of Lady Gaga and a lot of Michael Jackson," she explained. "And a little bit of a mix so that picture [in the MJ T-shirt meeting Gaga] means a lot to me. Again, I think God works in mysterious ways and had me wear that for a reason."
MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend. Don't miss the one-hour special "Michael Jackson's Influence on Music," airing Friday at 6:30 p.m. on MTV.

Eminem To Perform At 2010 MTV VMAs
Eminem
Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage
You can't throw the year's biggest party without inviting the artist with the best-selling album of 2010. Especially if that guy happens to be Eminem, whose history with the MTV Video Music Awards is long, legendary and full of the kind of eye-popping moments that make the VMAs the must-TiVo event of the year.
Slim Shady will bless the show's stage on September 12, where he is nominated for eight Moonmen for his smash comeback album Recovery, the best-selling non-country release of the year.
Em joins an already star-packed roster of performers that includes Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, B.o.B, and Florence and the Machine, as well as in-house DJ Deadmau5 and host Chelsea Handler. The list of presenters already includes Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Trey Songz, Ashley Greene, Selena Gomez and Ne-Yo.
Over the years, Eminem has given some of the most iconic performances of the modern VMA era, none bigger than 2000's Night of the Living Shadys. During that show, Em began his run through Video of the Year-winning hit "The Real Slim Shady" out on the streets of Manhattan, surrounded by an army of clones dressed exactly like him. The brigade then marched into Radio City Music Hall as Em finished "Shady" and then busted into a visceral "The Way I Am."
Even when he wasn't performing on the show, Eminem — who ranks sixth on the list of all-time VMA winners — has made his presence felt over the years, as he did in 2002 with his infamous run-in with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
Viewers can vote for general VMA categories, including Best New Artist, by visiting VMA.MTV.com. In addition, text voting for Best New Artist is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 97979. Voting continues through the show, live on September 12. Male movie stars vying for the prize include: Zac Efron in "Charlie St. Cloud," Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," Adam Sandler in "Grown Ups" and Jaden Smith in "The Karate Kid," while the female category will focus on Cameron Diaz in "Knight and Day," Selena Gomez in "Ramona and Beezus," Angelina Jolie in "Salt," Emma Roberts in "Twelve" and Kristen Stewart in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."
With "Eclipse" leading all nominees followed by Miley Cyrus and "Glee" with 13 each, the Teen Choice Awards will be handed out by Khloe, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, Logan Lerman, Zachary Levi, Ryan Sheckler and Yvonne Strahovski, who join previously announced presenters David Archuleta, Kristen Bell, John Cena, Miranda Cosgrove, Zac Efron, Victoria Justice, Jim Parsons and Shailene Woodley.
Nominations were also announced in the following categories: Choice Summer TV show (which includes bids for "Make It or Break It," "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and "So You Think You Can Dance"), Choice Male Summer TV Star (with "American Teenager" stars Ken Baumann and Daren Kagasoff earning nominations alongside "True Blood" star Stephen Moyer) and Choice Female Summer TV Star (with Nikki Blonksy of "Huge" going up against "True Blood" heroine Anna Paquin and "Teenager" star Shailene Woodley).

U2, AC/DC, Beyonce Top Forbes 2010 Music Earners List
U2's Bono

It just stands to reason that if you put on the biggest rock tour in history, you're going to make some serious coin. That might explain why more than three decades into their career, U2 easily took the top spot on Forbes magazine's list of the world's top-earning musicians, which also included newcomer Lady Gaga, as well as some of the usual suspects like Madonna, Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Bruce Springsteen.
Like most of the artists on the list, the veteran Irish rockers did it with touring cash, in their case the coin from their gigantic 360 Tour, which netted them $130 million over the past 12 months by selling more than 1.3 million tickets for an average price of $94 apiece in North America. The tour grossed $311 million, and each stop had gross ticket receipts of $10 million, but the band's bottom line was also boosted by healthy merchandise sales, as well as strong radio play for their deep back catalog, which continues to sell well. The outing was temporarily derailed this year due to Bono's back injury, but U2 plan to return to North American shores next summer for a victory lap.
The Forbes tally, which counted earnings between June 2009 and June 2010, had another veteran band at #2: power rockers AC/DC, who stormed back last year with a tour that grossed $2.3 million a night and helped them earn $114 million on worldwide grosses of $226 million.
Making a stand for the ladies, Beyoncé netted $87 million to become the highest-earning female on the list at #3. A healthy dose of her take was courtesy of major endorsement deals with Nintendo and L'Oréal, sales from her House of Dereon fashion line, and the $86 million in gross receipts from her 93-date world tour.
New Jersey rock icon Springsteen also made most of his money on the road, raking in $70 million by selling more than 2 million tickets on his world tour, which grossed $167 million. Heavy radio play and the sales of lots of catalog albums also helped him lock down the #4 slot on the list.
It was another solid year for Britney Spears, who earned the #5 position with the fifth-highest grossing tour of the year, which brought in gross receipts of $130 million. She also rang up big cash for endorsement deals with Elizabeth Arden and Candies, which added to her $64 million in earnings. Jay-Z gave wifey Beyoncé a run for her money, taking the #6 position with $63 million he brought in from his stake in the New Jersey Nets NBA team, 40/40 nightclub chain, the hit Broadway show "Fela!," Blueprint 3 sales and the album's tour, which grossed more than $1 million a night.
Gaga, 24, crashed the list at #7 thanks to strong CD and download sales, her smash worldwide Monster Ball tour and million-dollar endorsement deals with Virgin Mobile, Polaroid, Viva Glam and Monster Cable, which netted her $62 million. She beat out one of her musical and sartorial touchstones, Madonna, who hit the #8 spot with earnings of $58 million thanks to her Sticky and Sweet Tour, the fourth highest-grossing outing of 2009, which raked in $6 million a night for a $138 million gross. The pop legend also made cash from an all-Madonna episode of "Glee" and earned a lump of cash from her lucrative publishing royalties.
Country star Kenny Chesney landed at #9 with $50 million in earnings from a $71 million grossing tour and prominent sponsorships with Corona and MasterCard.
The final spot was a three-way tie between the Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay and Toby Keith, all of whom brought in $48 million. The unstoppable Peas did it with a worldwide tour that brought in $800,000 a night, as well as a raft of endorsement deals with Target, Honda, Bacardi and Apple computers. Coldplay's tour dates for 2008's Viva la Vida grossed more than $105 million as well as millions in merchandise sales. Keith made $30 million in gross concert receipts and earned the rest from a growing chain of restaurants, stakes in several publishing companies and millions a year from publishing royalties.

Britney Spears Tweets A Picture From 'Glee' Set

Swizz Beatz Encourages 50 Cent To Make 'Triumphant' Music
Swizz Beatz

Super-producer Swizz Beatz has been keeping super busy in the studio these days.
Swizzy has jumped on Kanye West's all-star "Power" remix and has been updating his Twitter followers about his recent late-night sessions with everyone from N.E.R.D. to Mary J. Blige. During his Thursday (August 26) interview on "RapFix Live," the rapper/producer revealed that he's also been in the lab with 50 Cent.
"I met up with him earlier in the day," Swizz explained about slotting studio time with Fif, Mary and Busta Rhymes on Wednesday. "He's working on some amazing material that we're possibly collaborating on." For the most part, Swizz kept the details of his collabo with 50 on the low: "I don't want to talk too soon or too early, but it's crazy."
50 has been going back and forth about the direction of his next album after reportedly scrapping plans to work in some dance rhythms on his Black Magic LP. Swizzy, who hit the studio with 50 to craft material for the Queens MC's 2007 album Curtis, said the only advice he has for Fif is to maintain a winner's attitude.
"Triumphant. That's it. Everything just would have to be triumphant," Swizzy advised. But the producer said he's encouraging all the stars he works with, including the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, to unleash a crazy amount of swagger in the booth.
"That's my approach on every artist I'm working with right now. Even with Mary, you're gonna be able to hear this week, probably Friday, her sound that's triumphant," Swizz said. "For me to have that blueprint and to want to be able to share it with everybody that's of talent, it's like, 'Wow, this is what I get to do for work?' It's fun."
What do you think an upcoming Swizz Beatz and 50 Cent collabo would sound like? Sound off in the comments below!

Katy Perry Had To Escape L.A. To Write 'Teenage Dream'
Photo: Capitol Records
Katy Perry decided to embrace her inner teenage girl when she sat down to write the title track from her forthcoming Teenage Dream album, out Tuesday. And she felt the only place she could get in touch with those warm, fuzzy feelings was her hometown of Santa Barbara, California.
The song, which she co-wrote with and was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Benny Blanco, recalls a simpler time when love felt like the first time. "Well, going to Santa Barbara, which isn't very far from L.A., it was just like it brought me back home and it took me out of this fast-paced L.A.," she told MTV News. "Everybody climbing on top of each other to get to that next step on the ladder ... sometimes L.A. can get exhausting."
In fact, it was that song that dictated how the entire album would play out. "I wanted to call it Teenage Dream because, really, there's a song on the record ... I wrote that song in Santa Barbara and it was a really pure moment for me because that's where I'm from. And it was where I started my creative juices, and it kind of exudes this euphoric feeling like everyone remembers what their teenage dreams were," she said. "All the girls that were on your poster walls ... and I want to continue to be one of those ... teenage wet dreams."
The track, however, wasn't all that easy to get right. "I'm in the studio fighting with them to change the melody, or I'm fighting for the best lyric at all times," she told Billboard earlier this year. "I think we rewrote 'Teenage Dream' five times for 10 days straight. On the last day, I was so happy to finally get somewhere that we all agreed on."
Perry said that there is a bottom line to the euphoria of the track. "That song is kind of like feeling that way when you were a teenager: really emotional, really invested. ... It's intense being in love and being a teenager. That's what 'Teenage Dream' is about."

VMA Nominations By The Numbers: Lady Gaga On Top
Lady Gaga
Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News
For an artist who has quickly made a habit of smashing records, Lady Gaga improbably did it again on Tuesday (August 2). She leaped past such career stars as "Telephone"/ "Video Phone" collaborator Beyoncé to set a new record for the most nominations in a single year for MTV's Video Music Awards, which air Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET.
The Mother Monster racked up 13 nods, far outpacing the artists with the second-most nominations, a resurgent Eminem, who racked up eight. On her way to setting the record, Gaga also became the first female artist nominated for two different clips in the coveted Video of the Year category for "Bad Romance" and "Telephone."
But 13 isn't the only significant number this year. We've pored over the nominations and here's a breakdown of the other figures popping out at the 2010 Video Music Awards:
1994: The year Usher's debut was released. As for the other nominees in the Best Male Video category, Eminem hit the scene in 1996, while the other three acts in the category — Drake, B.o.B and Jason DeRulo — didn't release their full-length debuts until 2010.
25: Nominated artists who've appeared on a NOW That's What I Call Music! Compilation: Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Jason DeRulo, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Drake, Eminem, David Guetta, Katy Perry, 3OH!3, Kid Cudi, Pink, Beyonce, Coldplay, David Guetta, Enrique Iglesias, Green Day, Gorillaz, Jay-Z, MGMT, Muse and Paramore.
23 years: Age difference between Best New Artists nominees Broken Bells' James Mercer (39) and Justin Bieber (16).
9: The record Gaga will have to beat if she wants to snag the distinction of most wins in a single night, currently held by Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer."
7: Number of nominated artists who are playing at this year's Lollapalooza festival: B.o.B., Dan Black, Green Day, MGMT, Mumford and Sons, Lady Gaga and the Black Keys.
6: First time nominees, including B.o.B., Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons.
2 1/2: Artists nominated in the Video of the Year category who were up for the award last year: Gaga (with assist from last year's winner, Beyoncé) and Eminem.
2: Previous times Eminem has been nominated for Video of the Year.
1: Number of times the band Ratatat has been mentioned before in connection with the VMAs.
1: Opportunities for a cast member of "Jersey Shore" to hop up onstage during an award acceptance, should Enrique Iglesias win for "I Like It" from the "Shore" soundtrack album.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12.
Are you surprised by any of this year's nominees? Talk about it in the comments.

Britney Spears Will 'Kind Of' Play Herself On 'Glee'

Ladies, gentlemen and Gleeks, Ryan Murphy has revealed a few more details about what fans can expect when Britney Spears makes a cameo in an episode of "Glee" dedicated to her and airing next season.
While the show creator wouldn't say exactly what part Spears will have, he did hint that she would be playing some version of herself.
"Well, it's her idea. She sort of wants to do a 'Where's Waldo?'-type thing with 'Where's Britney?' " Murphy told MTV News at the "Eat Pray Love" premiere in New York City on Tuesday night. Spears will "kind of" be playing herself, he added. "Yes, that's all I can say."
With so much anticipation surrounding the upcoming episode, Murphy said the cast is equally pumped to have the pop icon on set. In fact, many of them had long been pushing for a Spears episode.
"You know, I met with Britney Spears years and years and years ago right when '(Hit Me) ... Baby One More Time' came out and I was sort of starting my career, and I've always loved her," he explained. "I think what she's done in turning everything around is remarkable, and the show is just a love letter to her music.
"And the reason we're doing it is because so many of the kids on the show say, 'We grew up with Britney. We want to do Britney,' " Murphy continued. "So I said, 'OK,' but I'm filled with admiration for her."
One Gleek who's particularly excited to get Spears onboard is Heather Morris, who over the weekend at the Teen Choice Awards admitted she couldn't believe Spears might actually show up on set. "That'd be so nerve-racking," she said.
When asked which Britney songs she'd like to perform on the show, Morris said, "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do."

Meet Lissie, Co-Signed by Kid Cudi And Perez Hilton
Lissie
Photo: MTV News
Singer/songwriter Lissie grabbed our attention earlier this summer with a series of buzzed-about covers, including Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" and Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." But we weren't the only ones to take notice. Lissie garnered praise from the likes of California Gurl Katy Perry, filmmaker David Lynch and blogger/trendsetter Perez Hilton.
"It's nice to get some praise from time to time," Lissie told MTV News. "That's just human, you need it. But I think it's exciting. And I also, though ... personally I'm one of those people that's like, 'Oh the new buzzed-about person' ... I feel like it almost gives it too much expectation 'cause it's been made out to be so great that then you have really high standards to meet. But it's great. I think I can rise to that. I think that right now, I feel like I'm in a good stride and I got it going on."
That attitude — part playful, part modest — can be attributed to her Midwestern roots. Lissie grew up the youngest of four kids in Rock Island, Illinois — part of the Quad City area along the Mississippi River. She remembers cookouts in the summer, going to the pool and her mom's well-kept garden. The city's website even boasts its tie for second place as "one of the best mannered cities in the United States."
While Lissie has since relocated to the artsy community of Ojai, California, it was a trip back home that inspired her Kid Cudi cover. After a late night of daiquiris with her childhood best friend at the appropriately titled Daiquiri Factory (which serves $4 U-Call-It Bombs on Fridays), Lissie had her first encounter with the "Day 'N Nite" MC.
"I was having this really [nostalgic] moment of being in my hometown, like, 'Ahh yeah' windows rolled down, and she puts on 'Pursuit of Happiness' and I'm like 'I love this song' because he's like 'rolling the Midwest side out, living my life.' " Ten spins later, Lissie was set on covering her fellow Midwesterner.
The attention generated online from that cover — Kid Cudi even posted it on his Facebook page — fueled interest in what Lissie could offer in the way of original material. That time has finally come with the release of her debut album this week, Catching a Tiger.
Recorded under producer Jacquire King, who helmed Kings of Leon's smash Only by the Night, it's a bittersweet collection of songs about love and heartache. Take, for instance, the album's first single, "In Sleep," written after the breakup of her long-term relationship.
"I'd have these great dreams, like everything was fine and we were together and life was happy and everything's good," Lissie recalled. "That would be the place where I could see him and I would wake up from that dream and it was like the reality is that we're not together anymore and I need to get over it and move on with my life — which is gonna take some time but it's going to hurt until it stops hurting, and that's all right too."
With other album standouts such as "When I'm Alone" and "Cuckoo," will Lissie develop the same kind of following as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, which Perez Hilton helped propel? The man himself speculates.
"I don't know how popular Lissie's going to be in America," Hilton said. "I'm thrilled that MTV is doing this little profile on her and I'm equally excited that she's getting a lot of traction in the U.K. But will radio in the United States start playing Lissie? Probably not. However, I love those success stories of artists that can become successful without going about it the traditional way, without radio play."
Will you buy Lissie's new album? Tell us in the comments.

Miley Cyrus: 'I'm Not A Rapper'

In addition to adopting an edgier look and sound on her new album, Can't Be Tamed, Miley Cyrus is also trying out a new way of expressing herself. On tracks like "Liberty Walk," Cyrus raps — but please, don't call MC an MC.
"I call it more of a spoken, rhythmic [singing style]," she explained. "I'm not a rap type. Maybe a little bit. It's speaking to the music, but if I say that I'm a rapper, I'm going to be like, 'I'm not a rapper.' I've got no flow in that way. I've got no swag."
Her "Can't Be Tamed" single, however, did just get a hip-hop makeover, courtesy of Lil Jon, who Cyrus said took the track to a whole new level. "He's sick," she said. "I love him, because he just made this song. It was already something that set me apart, but it just [became something more with him]. You know, the fact that he respects my music and we are completely opposite styles, and the fact that he can be like, 'OK, this is a good song,' it just shows you don't have to be a certain age, gender [to like it].
"It's a dance song," she added about the remix. "It's a party song, and he's awesome. I like how he's one person when he's chilling in the studio. I've never seen someone flip on and off. He's got, like, double personas ... like so wired. It's cool."
Although she once admitted she has never heard a Jay-Z song — despite her Jay-referencing line in "Party in the U.S.A." — she does have a few other favorite MCs, including Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman. "I love it," she said of the two rappers. "I don't know any of the songs. They all blend in. I can't really break it up, but I like it. But I'm not a rapper."

Fantasia Talks Overdose On 'Behind The Music': 'I Just Wanted Out'
Fantasia Barrino

Fantasia Barrino knew exactly what she was doing two weeks ago when she overdosed on aspirin and a sleep aid.
"I didn't have any fight in me," she says in a new "Behind the Music" premiering Tuesday night on VH1. "I didn't care about anything. I just wanted out. At that moment, I wanted out. I wanted it to be over with — all of it, all of that sh--."
She's referring to the drama surrounding her alleged relationship with a married man, Antwaun Cook. A week after Barrino's suicide attempt, a lawyer for Cook and his wife, Paula, said the season-three "American Idol" champ was not responsible for breaking up their marriage.
"He knew Fantasia Barrino, but the failure of his marriage can in no way be blamed on anyone except the two people that were a part of the union — Paula and Antwaun," lawyer Nicole Sodoma said of the Cooks, who have reportedly been separated for a year. Barrino's suicide attempt came about a week after Paula Cook filed documents in court alleging that Antwaun and Barrino began a "covert adulterous affair" in August 2009 and that the two made a sex tape, which she claimed led to the couple's divorce.
The "Behind the Music" episode includes a brand-new interview that was taped Saturday in which Barrino discusses the recent events.
"I just sat in the closet and looked at the mirror and took all the pills in the bottle. I wanted to go to sleep and just be at peace. I knew exactly what I was doing. You can't accidentally take a whole bottle of pills," she says on the show, according to People magazine.
Single mom Barrino, 26, who has already returned to the promotional trail for her third album, Back to Me, which hits stores Tuesday, explains on the show that she felt like suicide was her only escape from the adultery allegations, People reported.
"I was tired of people doing me wrong, constantly, over and over again, dealing with my family — my father, dealing with men and their sh-- — I was tired," she says. "My head was hurting me. I was over it."
She says during the special that when she met Cook, he was separated from his wife and not living at home and that he didn't want to get back with Paula. "I remember waking up in the hospital [and thinking], 'It didn't work. I'm still here in this hellhole,' " she says. " 'Still here with all this drama going on.' "
A nurse convinced the four-time Grammy nominee that she had not yet fulfilled her destiny and that she needed to walk out of the hospital on her own. "I realized how people end up in the grave," she says. "Because that one moment of just breaking or feeling like I can't, I can't go on, it's too heavy. That was somewhere I don't ever want to go again."

Katy Perry Says Her Mom Sends Russell Brand 'Inappropriate' E-Mails

Katy Perry doesn't mind being inappropriate with her fiancé, Russell Brand. But as it turns out, that's a trait that runs in the Perry household. Her mom also likes to get a bit inappropriate with the comedian. For her part, Perry isn't sure how much she likes it.
"They really didn't know about him. They give people the benefit of the doubt and it's up to the person to mess it up," UsWeekly.com reports she told Glamour UK of her parents.
Eventually they did warm up to him, perhaps a bit too much for her liking. "He's very charming with them and he has an ongoing on e-mail love with my mom and she loves it," the "Teenage Dream" singer explained. "She flirts with him, which is totally inappropriate, and I tell him to stop."
Aside from all the banter Brand and Mama Perry share, it seems that the pop star is fully aware that life for her will be very different once she ties the knot. And while it'll take some adjustment, she's looking forward to it. "I won't be able to get drunk all the time, but I don't want to. I won't be able to waste hours on the Internet, but I don't need to," she said. "I have to be precious with my time because I need time with myself and I want time with him. It's just about balance."
A big change for the singer will occur when she and Brand decide to expand their family. But that won't happen for a while. "Babies in a few years, perhaps," she said. "If you see a bump, it's just water retention!"
When it happens, though, Perry notes that she has found the perfect guy to have babies with. "We are excited to get married, of course. And I think, in marriage, when you're picking a partner, one of the things to keep in mind is 'Will he be a good baby daddy?' And he'll be perfect," Perry said in a recent video chat.

Beyonce Says She's 'A Feminist, In A Way'

Whether it's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" or the Destiny's Child classic "Independent Women," most of Beyoncé's catalog consists of strong female-empowerment anthems. So it's no surprise that the singer considers herself to be a feminist.
In an interview with the U.K.'s You magazine, the pop star opens up about the importance of female companionship, not needing to hide behind Sasha Fierce and her much-talked-about baby plans.
"I think I am a feminist, in a way. It's not something I consciously decided I was going to be; perhaps it's because I grew up in a singing group with other women, and that was so helpful to me," she told the magazine. "It kept me out of so much trouble and out of bad relationships. My friendships with my girls are just so much a part of me that there are things I am never going to do that would upset that bond. I never want to betray that friendship, because I love being a woman and I love being a friend to other women."
Most recently, Beyoncé has certainly made her share of female friends in the industry. In the past year, the singer has collaborated with Lady Gaga ("Video Phone" and "Telephone") and Alicia Keys ("Put It in a Love Song").
While the singer might always have female besties, there's one thing she's cut out of the picture: alter ego Sasha Fierce. Earlier this year, the pop star revealed that she "killed" Sasha, and now she said the alter-ego absence is due to her newfound self-awareness.
"I don't need Sasha so much anymore, because these days, I know who I am. It takes time to figure out who you are, and I am still discovering different things about myself. As I am exposed to different experiences, I think, 'Oh, I like this. I didn't know I liked this,' " she explained. "That's the journey of life that is so exciting. More and more, I know who I am, I know what I like, I know what I want, and that makes me feel so free."
In fact, B already has her eye on some personal life goals. "My ambition is to continue to learn about the world and to eventually have a family," she said. And while Beyoncé remained coy about when she and husband Jay-Z will expand the Carter family, she hinted that there's really "no dates, no times" to motherhood. "It will happen when I am ready."
